ODI Cricket

One Day International Cricket, or simply ODI as the format is more often referred to, does exactly what you would expect from the name, it is an international match that takes place in just one day.

More specifically, ODI’s are international Cricket matches that take place between 2 countries who each have a maximum of 50 overs to either bat or bowl there way to a victory.

That places the format in the middle of longer form versions of the sport such as 4 day matches and test matches and shorter formats such as T20 and T10.

For many fans of the sport that makes it almost the perfect version of the sport as you still get to see all the skills involved in the sport, including both defense and attacking skills, and you still get to see tactics at play, but all the action is over and done with in one day.

So, if you think test matches go on for too long or you only have an interest in the last day of action and if you feel that T20 and T10 matches are all about simply hitting the ball as hard as you can and the format misses out on the nuances of Cricket, then the 50 over game is likely the one for you.

The great news for all fans of the sport and especially for those who love the 50 over format is that you can know what top class ODI matches from around the world live online via the fantastic live streaming services that are found on this very page.

History

The history of ODI Cricket can be traced back to the 5th of January 1971 when England took on Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in a test match that saw the first 3 days abandoned due to bad weather.

On that occasion, it was Australia who ran out the winners but, in all honesty, it was the sport of Cricket who was the true winner as the new format proved to be a huge success from the off and it also helped to attract a whole new set of fans to the sport.

It was then decided that a 40 over match would take place on a single day to decide upon the winner and from that on-the-spot decision, not only was ODI Cricket formed but the numerous other Limited Overs formats started to evolve.

In the 1970’s it was the Australian media mogul Kerry Packer who really started the advancement of limited overs Cricket when he established the World Series Cricket competition that would go on to create and establish many of the features of ODI’s that we see and enjoy to this very day.

That competition introduced things such as coloured uniforms (instead of both teams playing in all white), matches played under floodlights, the use of a white ball (instead of the traditional red one,), the use of dark screens (placed in the crowd to aid the batter’s line of sight), the use of multiple camera angles, the use of microphones and also the use of on screen graphics.

The success of the new competition, coupled with high ratings on Packers 9 network in Australia, led to the players turning full time professional and been able to get paid highly.

That took the sport to a whole new level and allowed players to concentrate fully on the game rather than having to work second jobs to pay the bills.

Although those major changes seem like the norm in this day and age, it did take until the turn of the millennium for the use of all white kits and a red ball to end.

It only took 4 years for the format to take to the global stage when the first ever ODI World Cup took place in 1975, although a women’s World Cup actually took place 2 years earlier.

Over the years there has been a lot of innovation regarding the rules of One Day Internationals and also in the way the sport continues when the weather doesn’t allow the full 50 overs to be played, with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method of deciding the run rate needed to win a shortened match.

The format is now played all across the globe and the majority of major tours include a short 50 overs series and whilst test playing nations still dominate the 50 overs scene, it has proven to be incredibly popular with emerging nations including the like sf Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Namibia, the United States (USA), Oman, Zimbabwe, The Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Scotland, Ireland and Afghanistan.

The Cricket World Cup is the leading One Day International tournament and has seen many of the biggest moments in the format’s history.

It has been the big test playing countries who have dominated the event with the West Indies, India, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England all enjoying success on the biggest stage of them all.
