As you maybe able to tell from some of those names above, the club have retained strong links to the community that they serve and that adds an extra element to match days as their fans are amongst the most passionate in Dutch football.

That is especially true when the clubs biggest rivals Ajax Amsterdam are in town with matches between 2 of the 3 giants of the Dutch game given the moniker of De Klassieker which translates into English as The Classic.

Matches between those two have given us some great down the years and are always great watches but no matter if Feyenoord are playing against Ajax or PSV or against any other domestic sides, the great news for all fans is that you can watch the action live online.

The club also have a rivalry with other teams based in the city of Rotterdam including Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior although these do not compare to the rivalry they have with Ajax and even with PSV.

With the Rotterdam team not able to match the finances of most other clubs in Europe and even with the likes of Ajax and PSV, Feyenoord have often had to rely on bringing through their own players and that is something they have continually done with some aplomb.

History
The history of Feyenoord is a long a storied one that starts bac in 1908 with the formation of the Wilhelmina club after a meeting at the De Vereeniging pub.

That club would play in red shirts with blue sleeves but it would be a period of change during the founding years of one of Europe’s biggest clubs as over the next 4 years they would change name to Hillesluise Football Club and RVV Celeritas.

In 1912, the club changed name once again to SC Feijenoord after the district of Rotterdam the club are based in and it was during this period they would adapt the red and white stripes that we so readily associate with them now.

They were promoted to the National Football Association in 1912 and continued their upward momentum with promotion to the top tier in Dutch football in 1918.

They moved to their Kromme Zandweg former home and just 3 year slater the club finally won their first piece of silverware by picking up the national league championship in 1924.

They would then go on to dominate much of the 20’s with further divisional titles in 1926,27,28 and 29.

The next decade got off to a great start as well as the Rotterdam based side picked up their first Dutch Cup in 1930 and they would continue to enjoy regional success and a number of national titles.

It was arguably the move to the new Feijenoord Stadion, known to most as De Kuip which translates as ‘The Tub’ that had the biggest impact during this era as it remains their home stadium to this very day.

The clubs first ever match at their new home was on the 27th of March 1933 against Beerschot but they would go onto play out of Sparta Rotterdam’s Kasteel during the war as the Nazi arty occupied the De Kuip.

In 1954, a meeting was held in Utrecht with the chairmen of the sport’s biggest teams excising to start up a new professional top tier, with the league been given the name of the Eredivisie.

Feyenoord were one of the founding members of the new league and remain one of a few teams to have never been relegated.

Feyenoord claimed their first Eredivisie title in 1961, which saw them enter European competition for the first time but they were soon eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur after a dominant first round win over IFK Goteborg.

The 1960’s would be a period of dominance for the club including the clubs first league and cup double in 1965.

In 1969, they won the league title and entered the 1969-70 European Cup where they would make it through to the final at the San Siro where they faced Celtic and after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, Ove Kindvall scored the winner for the Dutch team and they not only picked up their first continental silverware but they became the first Dutch club to win a major European trophy.

The next season, they took on Estudiantes La Plata in the Intercontinental Cup where thy drew in Buenos Aires before winning Rotterdam to become the first ever Dutch world champions at the club level.

The club would continue to enjoy success for much of their history but they would still have a number of memorable moments including in 1974, when they changed name from Feijenoord to Feyenoord to make it easier for non-Dutch speaking fans to say their name.

In the 1973-74 season, the newly named club would make their name on the European scene once again as they beat Spurs to pick up the UEFA Cup and to become the first ever Dutch winners of that competition.

The latter half of the 1980’s would prove to be one of the leanest periods for Feyenoord, which saw them battle against relegation in 1989-90 and with the main sponsor going bankrupt, things were looking bad for the club.

That saw Wim Jansen take over the struggling club and he almost instantly turned around their fortunes and not only saw them win domestic silverware once again, but they also started to see improved performances in Europe, including a run to the semi-final of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991-92.

During the 1990’s the club would continue to battle it out of domestic titles and trophies and would consistently feature in European competition including their first appearance in the 1997-98 season.

The new Millennium started with Feyenoord been regular competitors in Champions League and after finish 3rd in their group in the 2001-02 camepaign, they dropped down to the UEFA Cup and in the final of that competition, coincidently played the De Kuip, they would take on and defeat Dortmund to end a long run without continental success.

Unfortunately, that failed to be the spark for the club as they would then go on a run without success not helped by legal and financial worries off of the field.

Things did turn around and by the end of the 2016-17 season, the club would once again become the national champions in The Netherlands and in the 2021-22 season, the club entered the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League where they reached the final but lost to Italian side AS Roma.
