Watch Slovenian PrvaLiga
Although the top flight of Slovenia football, known in English as the Slovenian First Football League, was only established in 1991, football in the country does go back much further than that as the old Slovenian Republic League was part of the Yugoslavian system from 1920 onwards.
Abbreviated to 1.SNL, the top flight of Slovenia football not only acts as the main qualification process for European competitions but it also is of course the method of deciding with club is the best club in the country, with the team to finish top of the table come the end of the season named the Champions of Slovenia and they pick up the title.
As the top of the footballing pyramid in the country, the league also feature promotion from and relegation to the 2.SNL which means that the league is a fluid one and always features the best clubs in the country.
Despite that there have been a number of clubs in the leagues history who have held dominant spells and as you would expect, it has tended to be teams based in the biggest cities in the country who have enjoyed the most success, as is the case in the majority of sporting competitions as these clubs have easier access to sponsors, fan bases and they can more easily attract players from abroad.
In the early years of the league it was Olimpija, based in the capital city of Ljubljana who dominated by winning the first 4 titles but they are now dissolved after financial issues.
The next team to dominate were Nogometni klub Maribor, who won 7 straight titles between 1996-97 and 2002-03 and they also won 5 straight between 2010-11 to 2014015 but in more recent years, the competitive nature of the league has increased and the league title as spread out amongst a number of clubs including Olimpija Ljubljana that grew out of the ashes of the former club of a similar name.
Although the Slovenian top flight is not a league that attracts much attention over here in Britain and it cannot match man other leagues in terms of big name clubs, star players, finances, and huge stadiums, what it does have to offer is exciting football and lots of great development of players.
From bringing through local youngsters to scouting and attracting promising potential stars of the future from across Europe and even further afield, the league is a great starting place for many stars of the future and that just adds to the intrigue of it.
Format
The competition is contested via a round robin basis, or a traditional league table set up but in Slovenia the top flight consists of 10 clubs and that means they have to face off against each other 4 times instead of the traditional twice, with each club playing 2 games and at and 2 away from home against each side.
At the end of the season, the club with the most points wins the league championship, the top 3 clubs qualify for European competitions, the bottom club is relegation to the Slovenian 2nd division whilst the club finishing in 9th face a relegation play-off against the club finishing in 2nd place of the 2nd tier.
