Juve
Known as the Grand Old Lady, Juventus have one of the biggest fan bases in the Italian Serie A and have one of the most modern stadiums with the new Juventus Stadium allowing the club to compete with the very best financially.
Juventus have won all that there is to win in both domestic competitions and European competitions and have also been able to attract some of the world’s greatest players to Northern Italy although it is homemade players such as Alessandro Del Piero that have had the biggest impact on the clubs fortunes.
Originally then club played in a kit of pink shirts with black shorts and socks but ever since 1903, when the Juventus player John Savage, an Englishman who supported Notts County supplied shirts from his favourite club. Since then the Black and White stripes have become instantly recognisable as the colours of Juventus.
Due in part to their success and in part to the political and cultural make up of Italy, Juventus have a number of rivalries with their most high profile been with Internazionale with matches between the 2 known as Derby d’Italia (Derby of Italy) but it is with Torino that Juve traditional rivalry is with.
Torino are another Turin based team that play out of the same stadium, with matches between the 2 known as Derby della Mole (Derby of Turin).
Juventus have been at the forefront of modernising the image of Italian football and thanks to their iconic world-wide brand they are doing just that. Unlike so many teams in Italy, Juve play at a modern stadium, with no running track so that the fans are always close to the action.
Due to a large fan base in towns and cities across Italy, whenever Juventus are playing matches on the road, they take a large following with them. This helps to add a great atmosphere to any match they are playing which isn’t always the case in the top flight in Italy as many teams play in large stadiums with lots of empty seats.
It is not just across Italy where Juventus have a large fan base as due to migration of Italians and success the club have enjoyed, Juve have fan clubs and fanbases all around the world.

History of Juventus
The Turin giants of Juventus maybe one of the continents biggest football clubs and one of the most successful sides in Italy but as is the case with ever club, they had to start somewhere and in the case of the Zebra’s, it was down to students of the Massimo d’Azeglio Lyceum school in Turin who modern day fans have to thank to having a team to support.
All in all 13 students, including Eugenio and Enrico Canfari who went on to star on and off of the field for the club, formed the then named Sport-Club Juventus in 1897before they were renamed Foot-Ball Club Juventus just a couple of years later.
That was down to the decision to join the Italian Football Championship in 1900, with Juve playing their first ever match on the 11th of March 1900 when they lost 1-0 to local rivals Torinese.
The club struggled for the first few years before local businessman Ajmone-Marsan invested in the club, moved their training facilities from the poor facilities of the Piazza d’armi to the much more suitable Velodrome Umberto I.
For this period, the club’s colour scheme was pink and black but by 1905 the club had started to use the iconic Blackland white stripes, inspired by English club Notts County, that we all associated them with now and they had also picked up their first piece of silverware when they won the league title in 1905.
That success led to issues however as a big split in the boardroom between those who wanted the club to leave Turin and those who wanted them to stay. This led to the clubs president Alfred Dick and a number of top players leaving and setting up a new club, FCB Torino, who are now known as Torino Football club and who are one of the clubs biggest rivals, with matches between the sides known as the Derby della Mole (or the Derby di Torino).
This led to a period of rebuilding for the black and whites, who did of course end up staying in the capital of Piedmont.
It didn’t take long for the fortunes of the club to improve once again when the then FIAT vice president Edoardo Agnelli, part of one of Italy’s richest families, with the club once again moving stadiums.
This led to more success for the club, including picking up the 1025-26 league title and by the 1930’s, the club were firmly established as one of the biggest clubs in the country and a major force to be reckoned with as they were the first Italian side to turn fully professional.
That helped the club dominate the sport in Italy, including winning 5 straight league titles in the 30’s and providing the majority of players for the Italian national side.
The team moved once more to the Stadio Comunale (also known as the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino) but despite all of that, the club failed to match the early success of the 1930’s in the late 30’s and early 40’s before the sport ground to a halt due to the 2nd world war.
After the war, Gianni Agnelli took over as president and more success came to the club wit Englishman Jesse Carver taking over as head coach and Welsh star John Charles joining from Leeds to spearhead the attack of the ‘Grand Old Lady’.
Whilst the 50’s saw a retune to dominance, the 60’s was much less trophy laden but the 70’s was another decade of success for Juventus under the stewardship of club legend Giovanni Trapattoni, with this decade also seeing the club show their quality on the continental stage as they won their first ever European title in 1977 when they won the UEFA Cup.
This proved to be a catalyst for further success on the European stage in the 1980’s when after dominating the Italian top flight at the start of the decade, star player Michel Platini was named European Footballer of the Year for 3 years running (1983, 84 and 85) whilst wearing the barcode kit of Juventus and it was the star French striker who scored the winner against Liverpool in the 1985 as the club won their first ever Champions Cup (Champions League) title, although that match was marred by the Heysel Stadium tragedy when a stampede caused the deaths of numerous fans in Brussels.
During this era, the club became the first side to win all of the 3 main UEFA competitions and they also won the Intercontinental Cup to be the awarded the best club in the world.
By the mid to late 1980’s, many other clubs in Italy started to spend heavily with Diego Maradona’s Napoli and the 2 Milanese giants pushing the club and taking titles and trophies away from the Turin club.
In 1990, the club moved homes once more when they started to play out of the large Stadio delle Alpi (Stadium of the Alps) which was built for the 1990 World Cup which was of course held in the nation.
It wasn’t an ultra-successful start to life in their new stadium but with Marcello Lippi in charge, the club won the 1995 league title and return to an era of success thanks toa new crop of stars including the likes of Coro Ferrara, Gianluca Vialli, Roberto Baggio and the youngster Alessandro Del Piero.
With more success both domestically and continentally, the club started to attract stars from across the world including the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Edgar Davids, Gigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Lillian Thuram and Pavel Nedved.
The 2000’s saw success for the club but also lots of scandal, including one of the biggest scandals in European football when the club were a major part of the Calciopoli scandal in Italy, a major match fixing scandal, which saw the club demoted to Serie B and stripped of a couple of league titles.
This led to a number of high profile players leaving the club but many others stayed and to nobody’s surprise the club made easy work of the 2nd division and won promotion to top flight.
With little impact of the club from the fall out of the scandal, the club quickly moved back to the top of the domestic game in Italy and they were soon back in European action by the end of the decade.
In 2011, the club moved to their new Juventus Stadium home, also known as the Allianz Stadium, which although smaller than the Delle Alpi, did allow the club to sell out many games , have a better atmosphere than was achievable as there huge former stadium and they could also charge higher prices and have improved finances from better corporate facilities.
This and the fall of many giants of the Italian game, helped Juve to become the dominant force in Italy including winning nine consecutive Scudetti’s (league titles in Italy) between 2011 and 2020.
That run came crashing to an end when Inter Milan won the league title and Juve dropped down the table after a disastrous spell in charge by Maurizio Sarri, which was backed by the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as his replacement.
With the club needing an experienced hand and to stop the rot as player power took over the Grand Old Lady, the signing of rookie coach Pirlo was never going to be successful.
It was no surprise to quickly see the appointment of former coach Massimilliano Allegri and they got rid of their players who deemed themselves bigger than the club to hopefully give them a better future.
