History
The sport of football in Turkey can be traced all of the way back to the late 19th century when a group of Englishmen living in Salonica, then part of the Ottoman Empire.
The first league to be established in the country was the Istanbul Football League which started in 1904 and lasted for just 1 season, before undergoing a number of changes.
That ended in 1959 when the Milli Lig (Super Lig/ Super League) was started to join together a number of regional leagues that had been started up.
There had been attempt to establish national leagues before that including the Turkish Football Championship and the National Division but it was as the Super Lig that not only brought the regional leagues together but also proved to be success.
In that first year, the competition was known as the Turkish National League and saw 16 clubs take part including Adalet, Besiktas, Beykoz, Karagumruk, Fenerbache, Galatasaray, Istanbulspor and Vefa from Istanbul; Altay, Goztepe, Izmirspor, Karsiyaka from Izmir; Ankaraguca, Ankara Demirspor, Gencelerbirligi and Hacettepe Genclik from Ankara.
It was Fenerbahçe who would win the first ever league title and it was them who would dominate much of the first decade of the competition, with only Galatasaray and Besiktas been able to push them and pick up titles during that era.
After the Super Lig proved to be a success, the decision was taken to start up a second tier in 1963 which became known as the 2. Lig (Second League).
The 1970’s and 80’s saw the same three clubs enjoy lots of success but it was also during that period that Trabzonspor enjoyed the bulk of their success.
In the 2009-10 season, Bursapor became the first non-big 4 team to win a national league title in what was one of the biggest shocks in European club football and whilst that was matched by Istanbul Basaksehir in the 2019-20 season, it wasn’t the same at the same level due to political interference.
