The competition is split into 2 conferences, East and West and each conference is then split into 2 Division; Pacific Division, Central Division, Atlantic Division and Metropolitan Division.
The teams play mostly into-divisional matches to compete a regular season of 36-38 games. The teams then enter the players with the final 2 teams competing for the iconic Stanley Cup.
The NHL traditionally was made up of predominantly Canadian players and Americans but in recent times the number of Europeans playing in the league has continued to grow as the popular and standard of competition in Europe has increased.
The increase in popularity and playing standard in Europe coupled with the continuation of Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League, the sport of Ice Hockey has developed a loyal and growing fan base in Britain.

Watch National Hockey League Live
First developed in 1917 in Montreal, Quebec in Canada, the NHL has grown from a relatively local competition held in cities across the North East of the USA and Canada to become a North American competition and to where it is now the sports leading league full of players from across all Ice Hockey playing countries.
In fact the first few years featured a league of just 4 teams, all from Canada, and that is where the National comes form in the leagues title.
It was not until 1924, when the league expanded and the Boston Bruins joined the league to become the first NHL club from South of the border in the United States of America.
Since then and despite a few blips along the way, including 4 league wide shut outs, the league has continued to grow to where it is a household name even where Ice Hockey isn’t played and many of its teams are amongst the biggest sporting brands in the world.
It is no surprise therefore that the league has grown a small but fanatical fanbase across here in the United Kingdom and if that is you, you will likely want to watch action live online.
Despite that, the NHL can be a hugely frustrating experience to try and watch live on British television as even if you are in the fortunate position to have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that features live coverage of the NHL, the chances are that only a select number of matches will be chosen.
With 100’s of matches every season, that more often than not leaves fans of the competition missing out watching their favourite NHL team live in action or missing out on watching the match up that they were looking forward to watching the most.
Thankfully, there is now a way to watch the best action from the NHL including all of the top as you can watch live coverage from the National Hockey League via any of the great live streaming services found on this page.
If you do decide to watch live NHL Ice Hockey matches via one of the great live streaming services of the online bookmakers featured on this page, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch the NHL all season long.

History
The National Hockey League was first established way back in 1917, when it was the successor to the National Hockey Association (NHA).
The NHA had begun in 1910 in Canada where 7 teams were split between Ontario and Quebec.
It didn’t take long however for the Quebec based clubs to fall out with the Toronto Blueshirts and with them not been able to get rid of the owners of the Blueshirts, the Quebec clubs simply decided to end the NHA.
In November 1917, the owners of those Quebec clubs set up the National Hockey League (NHL) and they set up their own club in Toronto, but the early years remained a struggle with just 3 teams competing in the 1918 season.
The NHL took over the NHA position in the Stanley Cup as back then it was an inter league competition and it was the new Toronto team that not only won the first ever NHL competition, but they also became the first winners of the Stanley Cup from the NHL when they defeated the Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA).
In 1924, Montreal won there first ever Stanley Cup as a member of the NHL but in the next season, the trophy was won in unusual circumstances as it was actually the Hamilton Tigers that won the league title, but they refused to play in the cup.
Montreal was allowed to compete in the Stanley Cup final in their place, but they would lose to the Victoria Cougars of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), which would be the last time in history that a non-NHL team won the Stanley Cup.
The 1920’s would be a great time of expansion for the league as it left been a Canada only competition and move south to the USA, with the Boston Bruins becoming the first ever United States based team to enter the NHL in 1924.
They were soon joined by such iconic clubs as the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Rangers, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Detroit Cougars (who would become the Red Wings later).
The 1934 season saw the first ever NHL All-Star Game, when it originally in benefit of ACE Bailey whose career ended early.
The late 30’s and the 40’s was a difficult time for the sport as the great depression and World War 2 impacted all aspects of daily life, including sport.
With a lack of players, the league reduced to just 6 teams (the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Black Hawks, the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadians, the New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leaf’s).
Those six clubs are referred to as the ‘Original Six’ who would become a staple of the competition for the rest of its history and help to take things from a small northeast/Canadian competition to a fully professional north American competition.
In 1945, Maurice Richard become the first player to score 50 goals in a season and he would later become a superstar of the sport in the 50’s as his Montreal Canadians team became the to win 5 consecutive titles, a record they set between 1956-60.
In the 1960’s the league faced a challenger for dominance from the Western Hockey League and that led to another major expansion, with the league welcoming clubs from across the US including the likes of the Los Angeles Kings, the Minnesota North Stars, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the California Seals and the St Louis Blues.
Another new league, the World Hockey League, was established soon after and that led to new clubs been started up in the 1970’s in a period when the NHL lost several star players to the upstart league.
It proved to be a great time for the players, who gained record contracts as both leagues bid for stars but it was unsustainable for the owners and that led to the 2 leagues merging in 1979 as the WHA ceased operations and the NHL took on a number of their clubs including the likes of the Winnipeg Jets, the Edmonton Oilers and the Quebec Nordiques.
One of the most impactful parts of the merger was the NHL gaining Wayne Gretzky, who had started his career in the WHA for the Indianapolis Races before moving to the Edmonton Oilers and therefore joining the NHL where he would go onto become one of the most dominant and iconic players in the sports history.
He would break several individual records during his playing career, and he would lead the Oilers to become the dominant team of the 1980’s with Stanley Cup wins in 1984, 85, 87 and 88.
The 1980’s and 90’s saw a growth in popularity for the league and that led to another period of expansion, with a lot of clubs from the south of the USA joining including the likes of the Nashville Predators, the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the San Jose Sharks coming in.
In the 2017-18 season, the Las Vegas Golden Knights joined with the Seattle Kraken joining for the 2021-22 season.
