The Paul Hunter Classic is a professional Snooker tournament that attracts many of the sports top stars to Germany in an event that is well worth watching for all Snooker fans.
The tournament is named in honour of former star of the sport Paul Hunter, who died at just the age of 27 after a short battle with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).
It is an apt homage to the Yorkshireman as the former 3 times Masters Champions was the first ever winner of the then Name Grand Prix Furth when he defeated Welshman Matthew Stevens by 4 frames to 2 in the 2004 edition of the competition that was at that point a pro-am.
In 2005, the tournament was once again run as a pro-am event but the name of the event was changed to the Furth German Open. Under that name, the tournament was run 2 times and featured all English final with Mark King defeating Michael Holt by 4 frames to 2 in the 2005 edition and Michael Holt defeating Barry Hawkins by the same score in the 2006 event.
The tournament’s name change to the Paul Hunter Classic happened in 2007 and was the name of the event for the last 3 running s of the tournament as a pro-am.
In that 2007 edition, it was Paul Hunters compatriot Barry Pinches who defeated ken Doherty of Ireland to pick up the inaugural title.
Shaun Murphy, also of England, went on to win the next 2 editions including a 4-0 win over Mark Selby and a 4-0 win over Jimmy White in the respective finals.
For the 2010 edition, the event moved up from pro-am tournament to a minor-ranking level event, with title winners during this era been Judd Trump (who defeated Anthony Hamilton in 2010), Mark Selby (who defeated Mark Davis in 2011 and Joe Swail in 2012), Ronnie O’Sullivan (who defeated Gerard Greene in 2013), Mark Allen (who defeated Judd Trump in 2014) and Ali Carter (who defeated Shaun Murphy in the 2015).
In 2016, the tournament made further strides forward by becoming a full ranking event, with Mark Selby (England), defeating Tom Ford (England) to win the inaugural ranking event.
Michael White of Wales won the 2017 edition, by defeating Shaun Murphy, before Kyren Wilson 9England) defeated Peter Ebdon (England) in the 2018 edition but unfortunately the 2019 edition, won by Barry Hawkins (England), saw the tournament drop back down to a non-ranking level event.
