NBA
The National Basketball Association, more commonly known to all as simply the NBA, was first formed back in June 6, 1946 when it was known as the BAA. Originally the league was developed by owners of Ice Hockey arenas in the North East looking for extra events for their arenas.
Whilst the sport still has a big following in the North East and in the New York Knocks and Boston Celtics, the league still has 2 of their most iconic teams in the original heartlands, the league has continued to grow and to spread it’s wings to where they now have major teams spread across the USA, from East to West and North to South.
The Chicago Bulls became the biggest team of the 1980-90s whilst the Orlando Magic, San Antonino Spurs and Miami Heat from the hot South enjoyed dominance in the couple of decades after that.
Things have spread West over the past decade or so with California teams dominated and with the La Lakers becoming arguably the most iconic team.
Whilst a team sport, the NBA hasn’t been shy in creating stars of their players with many big names becoming the franchise player for their team and almost seemingly winning titles and championships for their teams.
Players such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neil have all become mainstream celebrity and known as much as been a famous face as they are for their on court abilities.
With iconic teams, famous star name players and great action, it is no wonder that the NBA is the leading basketball league in the world and it is no surprise that is has become as popular as it is.
The great news for all fans and for those new to the sport is that you can watch each and every NBA game live online via our NBA live streaming partners. Make sure you miss non of the action by signing up to one of these great NBA live streaming service:

History
The history of the National Basketball Association can be traced back to the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of ice hockey arenas in the northeast and mid-west of America as well as in Canada.
The first game saw the Toronto Huskies welcome the New York Knickerbockers at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in what is now classed by the NBA as the first ever match in NBA history.
There had already been several attempts at starting up professional Basketball leagues in the US before that, but it was the BAA that successfully took the sport into large arenas and attracted decent crowds.
One other league, the NBL, was of a similar standard of play to the BAA and by 1949, there had been several teams swop leagues and that in part led to the merger of both leagues and the change of name to the NBA.
In the first season of the newly formed ‘super league’, the league had 17 clubs with a mix of locations from big cities to small towns and playing out of everything from large arenas to gymnasiums and armories.
The Minneapolis Lakers was the last ever winners of the BAA championships and they would go onto win the first ever NBA title in a run of 5 titles in 6 years.
By 1950, the league had shrunk to 11 teams and then for the 1953-54 season, the league had reached an all-time low of just 8 clubs; Boston Celtics, Minneapolis Lakes, Fort Wayne Pistons, Syracuse Nationals, New York Knicks, Philadelphia Warriors, Rochester Royals and the Tri-Cities Blackhawks.
As in so often the case in professional league competitions of all sports, there have been several sides that have enjoyed dominant spells in the league with the first been the Boston Celtics, who dominated much of the 1960’s.
They won the league every season between 1959-66, the longest streak in NBA history and in 1967-68 and 1969.
This was also a period of expansion and moves in the league with clubs such as Minneapolis (to LA), Philadelphia (to San Francisco) and St Louis Hawks (to Atlanta) all relocating and the league entering the 1970’s with 14 sides.
One of the first threats to the leagues dominance came in 1967 with the formation of the American Basketball Association (ABA), who would attract a few big stars in the 1970’s.
That didn’t stop the NBA from continuing to expand during that era, with 18 clubs in the league by 1976.
With both the NBA and the ABA battling it out over clubs and players, it was no surprise to see the 2 leagues merge with each other, with the San Antonio Spurs, the Denver Nuggets, the Indiana Paces and the New York Nets all joining the NBA.
The NBA would take on the 3-point field goal rule from the ABA and with rookie future stars including the likes of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson coming into the league alongside all the stars from the 2 merged league, the NBA was all set for a surge in popularity during the 1980’s.
That set the league up for its first superstar and the player to come along and take that mantle was Michael Jordan, who played his first match for the Chicago Bulls in 1984.
During that period, it was the Los Angeles Lakers who dominated the sport with 5 league titles between 1980-1988.
In the late 80’s into the early to mid-90’s, the league would see huge growth in terms of new clubs joining and in popularity but the next big threat to the league would occur in 1998, when the club’s owners began a lockout, and the season would be shortened to half a season.
Much of that growth was down the dominance of the Chicago Bulls, who won 6 titles between 1991-1998 with led to the emergence of a few stars.
It did see the San Antonio Spurs win the Championship and therefore becoming the first former ABA team to win the NBA Championship in 1999.
For the first decade of the new millennium, it was the Spurs and the Lakers who dominated things before the Golden State Warriors took charge with an incredible rivalry against the Cleveland Indians, in the 2010’s that saw the 2 meet in the final every season starting in 2015 and ending in 2018.
