History
Origins in medieval France
The roots of tennis can be traced to a medieval European game known as jeu de paume, meaning “game of the palm”, which developed in France during the Middle Ages. Players initially struck the ball with their hands, later adopting gloves and other forms of protection before the development of racquets. The game was played in courtyards and specially constructed indoor spaces, and it became particularly popular among French nobility and members of royal courts. Its influence remains visible in tennis terminology: the word “tennis” is commonly linked to the French expression “tenez”, meaning “take” or “receive”, which players may have called out before serving.
Early jeu de paume was not identical to modern lawn tennis. Rules, equipment and court layouts differed from those used today, and variations of the game developed over several centuries. Nevertheless, it established important foundations for racquet sports, including serving, returning a ball across a dividing line and competing within a defined playing area. The long relationship between tennis and French sporting culture also survives in the French Open, officially known as Roland-Garros, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
The invention of modern lawn tennis
Modern lawn tennis emerged in Britain during the nineteenth century, when outdoor lawn games became fashionable among wealthier households. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield is widely associated with the introduction of a commercial version of lawn tennis in 1873. He called his game Sphairistikè, a name derived from Greek relating to ball-playing, and marketed a set of equipment and instructions for playing it on a lawn. Wingfield’s version differed from the sport played today, but it helped popularise outdoor tennis as a recreational activity.
The game developed rapidly as players and clubs refined the rules, court dimensions and scoring system. In 1874, Mary Ewing Outerbridge is often credited with introducing lawn tennis to the United States after encountering the game in Bermuda, although accounts of its earliest spread vary. By the mid-1870s, tennis was attracting attention in Britain and abroad. Its relatively portable equipment and suitability for private lawns helped it spread among social circles that had access to suitable outdoor space.
Wimbledon and the first championships
A major milestone arrived in 1877, when the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club held the first Wimbledon Championship at its grounds in Wimbledon, London. The event was organised partly to raise money for the club, and its first championship was a men’s singles competition. Spencer Gore won the inaugural title, defeating William Marshall in the final. The tournament helped standardise important elements of the game, including court layout and rules, and became a model for organised tennis competitions.
Wimbledon expanded over time, adding women’s singles in 1884, alongside men’s doubles that year. Women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions were introduced later. The championship gradually became one of the sport’s most prestigious events, known for its grass courts, royal associations and distinctive traditions. Its growth reflected the increasing popularity of tennis as both a recreational activity and a competitive sport.
The growth of international competition
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, tennis spread across Europe, North America and other parts of the world. National associations and clubs established competitions, while international contests helped develop a common sporting identity. The United States National Championships, the forerunner of today’s US Open, began in 1881. The French Championships were first held in 1891, initially as a competition for club members in France, before eventually becoming an international event. The Australian Championships began in 1905 and later evolved into the Australian Open.
In 1900, the first Davis Cup competition was held after American tennis player Dwight F. Davis donated a trophy for an international team contest between the United States and Great Britain. The Davis Cup became a major fixture in men’s team tennis, complementing the individual tournament circuit. Women’s international team tennis later gained a major competition through the Federation Cup, established in 1963 and subsequently renamed the Billie Jean King Cup. These events helped extend tennis beyond individual rivalries by creating national team identities and international sporting narratives.
The four Grand Slam tournaments take shape
The Australian, French, Wimbledon and US championships gradually developed into the sport’s most prestigious annual tournaments. The term “Grand Slam” came into tennis from bridge and other card-game terminology and was popularised in the sport during the 1930s. American player Don Budge achieved a historic milestone in 1938 by winning all four major championships in the same calendar year in men’s singles. His achievement established the calendar-year Grand Slam as one of tennis’s most difficult accomplishments.
The four tournaments developed distinct identities through their surfaces and settings. Wimbledon remained associated with grass, the French Championships became established on clay at Roland-Garros, and the Australian and US championships evolved through changes in venue and playing surface. The Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park in 1988 and began using hard courts there, while the US Open adopted hard courts in 1978 when it moved to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The French Championships moved to Roland-Garros in 1928, giving the tournament the venue it is now known for.
The Open Era begins in 1968
For many years, the major championships were restricted largely to amateur players, while professional players competed separately. This division created disputes over eligibility, prize money and the status of the sport’s leading competitors. In 1968, tennis entered the Open Era, allowing professionals and amateurs to compete against one another in the major championships. The first Grand Slam tournament of the Open Era was the French Championships in 1968.
The change transformed professional tennis. Players could increasingly earn a living from competing, and tournament organisers had greater opportunities to attract the strongest fields. Television coverage, sponsorship and international travel helped expand the sport’s audience. In 1969, Rod Laver won all four Grand Slam singles titles in a calendar year, repeating his 1962 achievement from the pre-Open Era. He remains the only man to have completed a calendar-year Grand Slam twice in singles.
Professional tours and the rise of modern champions
As professional tennis grew, the organisation of tournaments and rankings became increasingly important. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) was founded in 1972 to represent male professional players, while the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) was founded in 1973 under the leadership of Billie Jean King. Both organisations helped establish clearer ranking systems and strengthen the professional structure of their respective tours.
Billie Jean King was a major figure in the fight for equal recognition and prize money in women’s tennis. In 1973, she defeated Bobby Riggs in the widely publicised “Battle of the Sexes” match, which attracted enormous public attention. That same year, the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to offer equal prize money to men and women. The other majors adopted equal prize money at different times, with Wimbledon becoming the last of the four to do so in 2007.
Global superstars and memorable rivalries
From the late twentieth century onwards, tennis reached wider global audiences through charismatic champions and increasingly sophisticated broadcasting. In men’s tennis, players such as Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi helped shape different eras of competition. Their contrasting personalities and playing styles contributed to rivalries that attracted interest well beyond traditional tennis audiences.
Women’s tennis also produced influential champions, including Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams. Their achievements helped raise the profile of women’s sport and demonstrated the tactical, technical and physical demands of elite tennis. The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, became two of the most significant players of their generation, winning major singles and doubles titles and inspiring new audiences worldwide.
In the twenty-first century, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic created one of the most remarkable periods in men’s tennis. Federer became celebrated for his fluid attacking game, Nadal for his extraordinary intensity and dominance on clay, and Djokovic for his exceptional returning, flexibility and defensive resilience. Their competition for Grand Slam titles spanned many years and pushed standards of fitness, consistency and tactical execution to extraordinary levels. In women’s tennis, champions such as Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova and Iga Świątek have also helped shape modern competitive eras.
Technology, changing rules and tennis today
Modern tennis has been transformed by improvements in racquets, strings, court preparation, physical conditioning and performance analysis. Graphite and other composite materials replaced many traditional wooden racquets, enabling players to generate greater power and spin. Coaches and athletes now use match statistics and video analysis to examine serving patterns, return positions and rally tendencies. Electronic line-calling technology has also changed how some tournaments handle close calls, although its use and implementation vary by competition.
The professional game now includes the ATP Tour, WTA Tour, Challenger and ITF circuits, as well as the four Grand Slam championships and international team events. The Olympic Games also feature tennis, bringing national representation into a sport otherwise dominated by individual tour competition. Alongside the professional circuit, wheelchair tennis has developed into a major competitive discipline, while junior and recreational tennis continue to introduce new generations to the game.
Tennis remains a sport built on a balance of tradition and change. Its scoring language preserves historical quirks, its major tournaments maintain distinctive identities, and its players continue to develop new techniques and strategies. From the early hand-played games of medieval France to modern Grand Slam finals watched around the world, tennis has evolved into an international sport that tests physical ability, tactical awareness and mental resilience. Its history is not merely a record of champions and trophies; it is the story of a game that has repeatedly adapted to new audiences while retaining the drama of two players competing for every point.
