A lot of that is down to the fact that they are based in the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam, which gives them access to more sponsors and more fans and therefore more finances but with the club not been able to match the majority of clubs throughout Europe, it has been down to the clubs own youth academy that has kept the club so competitive and so successful.

The clubs home stadium is one of the biggest in Europe and is one of the most modern with it including a retractable roof and plenty of corporate facilities to go along with the nearly 55,000 fans it can host.

With the matches often sold out at the Johan Cruyff Arena, named after the former star player and manager, there is always a great atmosphere for Ajax homes games but when the other giants of Dutch football are in town, things get ramped up and the atmosphere is amongst the best in European football.

History

Ajax were founded way back in March 1900 and by 1911, they had gained promotion to the Dutch top flight and that speedy rise to fame and success continued as by 1917, they had one there first national piece of silverware by winning the KNVB Beker, the Dutch national cup competition.

Just the very next season saw the club win its first ever national league title and not only did the club defend that title in the 1918-19 season but they went the whole season undefeated and in doing so, they became the first ever club to do so in The Netherlands.

Throughout the 1920’s, the club enjoyed lots of success throughout the 1920’s at the regional level but there years as a successful club at the national level were over for the decade.

Thankfully for the clubs fanbase, it didn’t take long for Ajax to regain their place as a leading club in the nation as the 1930’s as that decade would see them win 5 national championships (in 1931, 32, 34, 37 and 39).

In 1956, the Dutch inaugurated a new national championships, the Eredivisie for which Ajax were a founding member.

The club became the first ever winners of the competition and then made there first appearance in the European Champions Club Cup.

In 1965, th club implemented the Total Football philosophy of new manager Rinus Michels, which is of course the philosophy they retain to this very day and it is the style of football that would go on to change the sport with the likes of Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona enjoying periods of success playing a version of it.

That coincided with the debut of Johan Cruyff, one of the world’s greatest ever players as the club entered its golden era, both domestically and on the continent.

During this era, the club would win 7 Eredivisie titles, 4 KNVB Cups and 3 European Cups, with the era only ending when Michels and Cruyff moved to Barcelona.

The 1980’s saw the return of Cruyff and the emergence of stars such as Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, which it turn led to more success throughout the 80’s both domestically and in Europe.

The 1990’s saw Dennis Bergkamp breakout as the next star and helped them win league titles and the 1992 UEFA Cup.

Upon his sale to Inter, a new breakout of academy stars including Frank and Ronald de Boer, Clarence Seedorf, Edwin van der Sar, Edgar Davids, Winston Bogarde and Michael Reiziger led to more success including 3 back to back titles for the first time since the 1960’s.

During that run, the club went the whole of the 1994-95 season undefeated and in doing so became the first Eredivisie club to achieve that.

They would also win the 1995 Champions League final against AC Milan which was their first win since there 1970’s heyday.

For the next few decades, the club suffered from the same problems over and over again as they continued to produce major stars and enjoy success domestically but as soon as those stars showed form on the European stage, bigger clubs with more money took them off of their hands.

The late 2010’s did see the club go deep into European competitions once again with a Champions League semi-final appearance but that once again saw there top stars head to Spain, Italy and England.
