The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, more commonly known as NASCAR, is a racing company based in the USA that is known predominately for its stock-car racing.

Traditionally run on oval tracks with close wheel to wheel, the races feature mainly teams and drivers from the southern states of the United States of America which is thought of as the heartlands of the sport.

NASCAR sanctions races in 48 states of the US as well as in Canada, Mexico and Europe whilst the company base is Daytona Beach, which is also home to one of the companies biggest races- the Daytona 500.

There are a number of series that fall under the NASCAR umbrella with the top series been the NASCAR Cup series which features the best races and the biggest teams and is also the most watched.

The 2nd level series for the company is the NASCAR Xfinity series and acts as a place for teams and drivers to learn and show their skills to a nationwide audience without the pressure of been in the top series.

Smaller events including the Truck Series, which features pick up trucks and the ARCA Racing series.

NASCAR Racing

The sport of stock car racing, especially in the US, can trace its routes back to the days of prohibition and the practise of bootlegging from where drivers took whiskey from the Appalachian region to large towns and cities.

With the need to avoid detection, the drivers used small and nimble cars that were modified for both speed and cargo capacity and it was from those early designs that modern day NASCAR stock cars have developed from.

After the ending of prohibition, the drivers moved south and tried to avoid ‘revenuers’ who were trying to tax moonshiners.

With the move south, the development of cars and the growing reputation of Daytona Beach as the destination of choice for land speed records and for car racing, it is perhaps no surprise that the 2 things came together and the formation of organised racing in the South, especially in rural areas of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, progressed and organised itself into what was become the modern day NASCAR.

It was racing promoter William ‘Bill’ France Sr who after moving to Daytona Beach from Washington DC who brought the best drivers together under his stewardship to professionals the sport of stock car racing after a meeting of drivers and promoters at the Ebony Bar of the Streamline Hotel in the seaside resort of Daytona Beach.

At the end of the meeting held on the 21st of February 1948, the new era of racing started and NASCAR was born.

From their on in, the number of races have continued to increase, the race tracks and stadiums have grown, the crowds and developed into the biggest in the world for stock car racing and perhaps best of all, the cars have gotten faster and the racing more and more exciting.

If you are new to stock car racing in the US, you will likely have seen the sport in popular culture, such as films and television programmes, but you may not have a full appreciation for just how big the sport is.

Form 100’s of races a year, many of the biggest race tracks in the world and drivers from across the globe, the sport continues to expand and whilst the sport may not be able to match the likes of F1, Formula E, MotoGP and over European based formula’s for fans, wealth and global reach, what NASCAR can offer is some of the closest, wheel to wheel action in the whole world of motor racing.

If that is you style of racing then the sport is for you.

Amongst the most famous race tracks to feature in the sport are the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (nicknamed the Brickyard), the Texas Motor Speedway (The Great American Speedway), the Bristol Motor Speedway (the Last Great Colosseum / Thunder Valley), the Circuit of the Americas, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (the Diamond in the Desert), Atlanta Motor Speedway (Hotlanta Speedway), Talladega Superspeedway (Dega) and the iconic Dayton International Speedway (World Center of Racing).

Despite all of the above, it can be frustratingly difficult for fans of NACAR racing to watch along live on British television.

Even if you are in the fortunate position to have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that features live racing from NASCAR, you will often only get to watch a small number of races and qualifications and you will also in many ways have to subsidise other sports.
