History

AC Milan were formed way back in 1899 as the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club by an English expatriate named Herbert Kilpin.

That is why the club uses the English spelling of the cities name instead of the Milano Italian spelling.

The club enjoyed early success as they won their first ever Italian championship in 1901, and 2 further titles in 1906 and 07.

The club won lots of other trophies during their first decade of existence but things started to get tricky in 1908 as internal disagreements over the signing of foreign players led to a new club been started up in the city, there now arch rival Inter Milan.

That saw a downturn for the club and it would take until the 1950-51 season for AC to win the national championship once again.

Interestingly, that new period of success was on the back of the club signings 3 Swedish stars, where the trio known as Gre-No-Li helped the club win the 1951, 55, 57 and 59 league championships.

It was during the 50’s that the club also started to enjoy success on the continent by winning the 1951 and 56 Latin Cups.

Milan were also the first Italian club to play in the European Cup (in 1955-56) and they would reach the final just a couple of days later.

They wouldn’t have to wait long for their first Europe Cup win however as they defeated Benfica to win the 1962-63 trophy and they would defeat Ajax to win the 1969 final.

During that period, they also won their first ever Coppa Italia in 1967 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1967-68 and 1972-73 as the club become one of the biggest and most successful in Europe.

The 1970’s started strongly with he club 10th Scudetto (league title) but things would soon start going down hill and after a betting scandal, the club were related to Serie B for the first time as a punishment.

They return to the Italian top tier at the first time of asking, but they were relegated straight away, only for them to win the Serie B title once again.

That period as a yo-yo club left them in financial issues but in 1986, the well-connected Silvio Berlusconi took over as the owner of Milan and that led to a number of start names joining the club including the likes of Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten.

That coincided with home grown talent including the likes of Paulo Maldini, Allessandro Costacurta, Roberto Donadoni and Franco Baresi to create one of Italian football first super teams and one that won lots of titles and trophies, both at home and on the continent.

With Arrigo Sacchi in charge, the club won a number of Scudettos, back to back European Cups and under the tutelage of Fabio Capello, they would continue to dominate into the 1990’s.

The 90’s saw the club dominate the Italian game and reach 3 straight European Cup finals between 1993-95 but after a small dip towards the end of the decade, the club won the 1998-99 Scudetto, which was the clubs centenary.

The new millennium started well, with former star player Carlo Ancelotti leading the club to win the 2003 Champions League final against Juventus.

They would reach the 2005 final as well but they lost to Liverpool, with the same teams meeting in the 2007 final, where Milan came away with the trophy and the title of Champions of Europe.

Unfortunately for their fan, the club were punished soon after for their involvement in the Italian Calciopoli match fixing scandal.

That punishment saw the club drop back down the table with Inter Milan firstly taking over dominating things domestically before Juventus recovered from relegation during the same scandal to then dominant Serie A.

The club would then drop down the table for much of the next decade before breaking back into the Champions League during the 2021-22 season 7 years after the last time they qualified.

That acted as a major boost for the club who would go onto win the 2021-22 Scudetto, with a club record points tally of 86, which was their first Serie A title since 2010-11.
