Watch Barcelona

No matter if you know the Catalans giants as Football Club Barcelona, FC Barcelona, Barcelona or simply Barca, there can be no denying that the club are one of the giants of world football and are an icon of Spanish football.

Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers the club quickly become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism which has grown and grown in recent years with the club now living up to its Mes que un club (More than a club) motto more than ever.

Unlike the majority of football clubs, FC Barcelona is owned and operated by the fans, who elect a president to run the day to day operations of the club.

The clubs Camp Nou (often referred to as Nou Camp), is one of the world’s biggest stadiums and is often thought of as one of the most atmospheric for big matches and on European nights when nearly 100,000 fans sing the clubs ‘Cant del Barca’ anthem.

Domestically the club have dominated the Spanish game alongside Real Madrid and they have won all that there is to win on both the European and World stage.

Barca have a long standing rivalry with Real Madrid which is built around more than just a football rivalry but also enters into politics and national pride. Matches between the two teams are known as El Clasico and are amongst the most watch sporting events in the world.

Barca also have a heated rivalry with city neighbours Espanyol although it has to be said that this rivalry has become much less heated in recent seasons. Historically it was a case of Barcelona been very much Catalan and Espanyol been very much Castilian. Those historical stances meant there was a lot of heat between the 2 sets of fans that was much more than simply local rivalry but with the politics of both clubs (and especially of Espanyol) changing and become much similar, the clubs are left with a local rivalry that is (and has been historically) one sided.

FC Barcelona are one of the founding clubs of La Liga and alongside Real Madrid and athletic Bilboa, they have never been relegated from the top flight.

The club have one of the largest fan bases in the world and no matter with town or city you are in or what continent you are on the chances are you will see somebody wearing the iconic n blue and red stripes of Barcelona.

History of FC Barcelona
As you would expect from a football club that has grown from a regional club side in Catalonia to instantly recognisable global sporting icon, the history of FC Barcelona is a long and successful one but it is also a history that started from humble beginnings.

In 1899, Hans Gamper from Switzerland placed an advert in Los Deportes stating a wish to start up a brand new Association Football club in the city of Barcelona and if anybody was interested in playing, to come along to a meeting on the 29th of November at the Gimnasio Sole.

Although not much interested was shown, just enough was as 11 men showed up and therefore a new club was born- Foot-Ball Club Barcelona.

FC Barcelona started life playing in a local competition (the Campionat de Catalunya) and national cups (the Copa del Rey). And it didn’t take long for success to be had as the club won the 1902 Copa Macaya.

Things didn’t go too smoothly and Hans Gamper, by then known as Joan Gamper became the president of the club and took over the attempts to save the club and to keep football in Barcelona.

As part of the changes undertaken to improve the finances of the club, the team made the move to a new home stadium at the Camp de la Industria, which had a capacity of around 8,000. The move also saw the club announce a competition to design a new club crest and that proved to be a big part of the future of the club as the design entered by Carles Comamala was chosen and it is still the design, with some small changes, that is used to this very day.

FCB also entered the newly formed Pyrenes Cup, featuring the best teams from Southern France, the Basque Country and Catalonia and this new cup comp proved to be a successful avenue to the club who won 4 straight trophies between 1910-1913.

That period was also when the club moved away from a Castilian identity and towards a Catalan identity, including using the Catalan region language and that has been something that has been at the forefront of the culture and identity of the club ever since, despite the global nature of the club and the sport in the modern era.

By the 1920’s, the club were now established, had settled finances and were a growing force in the region so now the focus was to increase memberships in the club and to fund a new and larger stadium and this was something that the club achieved with relative ease by 1922, when they moved to Les Cortes, a stadium with an initial capacity of 30,00 but by the 1940’s the cubs continued success led to the stadiums capacity grow to around 60,000.

On the back of that, the club hired their first ever full-time manager- Jack Greenwell- which helped propel the cub to start their first ‘Golden era’ where they won 11 Campionats de Catalunya, 6 Copa del Reys and 4 Pyrenees Cups.

As with the majority of things in football, that era of success couldn’t last and by the 1960’s titles and trophies were drying up. Things were not helped by the clubs finances becoming tied up in the building of the now iconic Camp Nou stadium, which first opened in 1957 and of course has now gone on to become one of the most famous and instantly recognisable sporting stadiums in the world.

To the chagrin of most fans, it was Real Madrid that took over from Barca as the dominate force but they did restore some pride when they took on and defeated there big rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu in the final of the Copa del Generalissimo in a match watched by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

When Spain’s dictatorship ended in 1974, the club changed their official name to Futbol Club Barcelona and the 1970’s also saw the club start to ring in stars from across the globe headlined by the signing of Dutch superstar Johan Cruyff for the 1973-74 season.

The next big change the club made that has gone on to be a huge art of their future and has helped the club create their brand and identity is the formation of La Masia which has now gone on to become one of the world’s most famous sporting academies that has developed many household stars that have gone on to play for Barca and for other clubs across Spain and around the world including the academies most famous product- Leo Messi.

In 1982, the club signed Diego Maradona for a then world record fee of £5,000,000 and whilst his stay in the city was short lived, it was a sign of intention for the Catalans who went on to become one of the biggest clubs in the world over the next decade or so and that is a position that they have gone on to keep hold of ever since.

In the 2015/16 season, the club were still operating at the very top end of the European game including a win in the European Super Cup and they would continue to enjoy success in domestic cups and in the league, but problems off of the field were really starting to hit home.

The club struggled to replace Pep Guardiola and after going through a number of head coaches, including Ernesto Valverde, Luis Enrigue, Quique Setien and Ronald Koeman in just a few seasons, those off of the field issues started to hit home.

The club had the highest wage expenditure of all professional sports team and far above any other football club. Most of that was money that they couldn’t afford to pay out and the debts of Baca just continued to grow and grow and grow.

That led to pressure on the then President Josep Maria Bertomeu who struggled to handle their financial problems and simply tried to carry on as normal.

After a vote of no confidence, he resigned from office in October 2020 and that led to the return of former president Joan Laporta.

His tenure started well enough as the club would win the Copa del Rey, the only trophy for them under the coaching of Ronald Koemen, but the good times didn’t last as they were soon unable to comply with the strict Financial Fair Play requirements.

The club by this point were around 1.35bn Euros in debt and their wage bill was 103% of their income, something that obviously couldn’t continue.

The biggest direct impact of that was the loss of Leo Messi as they couldn’t afford his astronomical wages and they were hampered in bringing in new signings.

The club had to ask their top earners to take a pay cut and they would try and force out players on the fringes of the first team, who also were on big wages.

That of course led to players becoming unhappy and the clubs on the field performances worsened, which led to the sacking of Ronald Koemen, with former star midfielder Xavi taking over.

He started strongly but in the end the would exit the Champions League early, and then playing in the Europa League for the first time since 2003-04 and they would finish runners up in the league and exit the Copa del Rey early, and therefore ending trophyless.

In the 2022 off-season, the cub would sell off everything they could do including giving away future revenues from tv money and they would commercialise everything else including selling the naming rights to the Camp Nou.

That gave them some breathing room and they would go straight back to spending heavily including brining in superstar striker Robert Lewandowski from FC Bayern.
