History
The club were formed in 1904 under the name of Westfalia Schalke by a group of students, with there first club colours been red and yellow.

In 1912, and after failing to join an official league competition, the club merged with Schalker Turnverein 1877 in the hope that that would gain them entry into organised football competitions.

The merger wouldn’t last long however as they would split in 1915 but by 2019 they had merged again to form the Turn- und Sportverin Schalke 1877 club.

That merger proved to be more successful and by 1923 the club had won their first ever piece of silverware by winning the Schake Kreisliga.

In 1924, the football club once again split from the gymnastics club and took on the name of FC Schalke 04 and changed there playing colours to blue and white to set up the club that still stands today.

That split proved to be a positive one this time around as they would soon dominate the local scene in the region and by 1927, they would reach the then top tier of the Gauliga Ruhr.

The club would build a new stadium, the Gluckauf-Kampfbahn in 1928 and they would add the cities name to their name to become the FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 and almost in celebration of that, they won their first West Germany league championship in 1929.

Unfortunately that success proved to be short lived as they were found to exceeded salary levels and gained a long ban.

In their first match back after the ban, the club faced Fortuna Dusseldorf and drew over 70,000 fans to their ground.

The 1930’s saw the club start to impress on the national stage including reaching the final of the German Championship in 1933.

The club became a domain one in their region under the new structure put in place under Nazi rule.

The initial post war era was a tough time for every club in Germany and that was the case for Schalke as they would have some good moments during the late 40’s and 50’s but they would also have lots of struggle.

The 1960’s saw the introduction of the Bundesliga in Germany to create a new national league set up to top the footballing pyramid in Germany and Schalke 04 were one of the clubs to be chosen to take their place at the top table.

Things were originally a struggle and they only avoided relegation in the 1964-65 season due to the league expanding but by the early 70’s, they were pushing for league titles and they won their first ever DFB Pokal trophy in the 1971-72 season.

Unfortunately, that period almost ruined the club as it was found that a number of players and officials had accepted bribes, which some of their players, including Germany internationals, gaining life time bans.

Although those were commuted to around 2 year bans, it left the club struggling but they did move to their new Parkstadion home during that era which was built for the 1974 World Cup.

The 1980’s saw the club become a yo-yo club with a number of relegation and a number of promotions but upon promotion in the 1991-92 season, they would remain a top tier club until 2021.

During that period, they would have a number of strong season including winning back to back cups in 2000-01 and 2001-02 and they would feature in a number of European competitions including the Champions League.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last and with problem sponsorship deals linked to the Russian regime, issues off of the field impacted their growing struggles on the field and they found themselves dropping down to the 2nd tier after a loss to Armenia Bielefeld in April 2021 but the club did rebound quickly gaining promotion at the end of the next season.
