Watch Eliteserien
Norwegian top flight football was first established in 1937, when it was originally known as the Norgesserien before it changed name to the Hovedserien in 1948.
In 1962, the league changed name once more to become known as the 1. Division before changing yet again in 1990 when it became the Tippeligaen.
Its current name of the Eliteserien (or Elite Series in English) was brought in in 2017 but no matter what the competition has been known as down the year sit has consistently been the top of the footballing pyramid in Norway and it has bene the method of deciding the Norwegian champions.
As well as deciding the best club, it also features relegation to and promotion from the 1. Divisjon (the 2nd tier of football in Norway) and that not only create a fluid league but it makes sure that only the best clubs from Norway feature in the top flight.
Despite its long history, there have only been a handful of clubs to in the competition on more than 1 occasion and as is the case with the majority of sporting competitions around the world, it is the clubs based in the countries biggest cities who have been the most successful in the leagues history.
That is down to a number of reasons including the fact that these big city clubs have easier access to sponsors and to develop big fanbases and it is also easier to bring in talent from abroad, although in Norway that has been spread about more than other countries, with well off oil towns on the west coast of the country been able to compete with the big city teams from Oslo and Bergen.
If you were to ask even casual fans of football, there will likely be one team that they could name and that team is Rosenborg BK.
The club are based in the northern city of Trondheim and it is they who have dominated the domestic competition in Norway but perhaps most importantly, they have been the team from the country to enjoy the most success in Europe and that is were they have made there name outside of the country.
Other clubs to have enjoy good success down the years in Norway include Fredrikstad Fotballklubb, Viking (from Stavanger), Lillestrom, Valerenga (from Oslo), Molde and Brann (from Bergen).

The giants of Rosenborg have not only won the most league titles in Norway and have been the most successful in Europe but in 2010 they became the first ever club to go through a whole domestic season without losing a single game.
Although the league often goes overlooked by British media and television countries, it only takes a moment to look through the sheer volume and the quality of Norwegian players to have played in the English/ Scottish football pyramids.
That is down to a number of reason but one key aspect is that due to the Norwegian clubs not having the finances of other European league, they have to bring through and develop their own players.
If your favourite club have just signed a player from the league and you want to watch to see the next great star to come out of the country or if your team have drawn a Norwegian team in European competition and you want to see what your club have in store for them, you can now watch football from Norway easily and safely online.

Format
The top flight competition in Norway features a regular round-robin table, where each club faces each other home and away, with the club to win the most points over those matches declared top of the table.
The 2 lowest ranked clubs come the end of the season are automatically relegated to the First Division, with the sides finishing top and second in the 2nd tier been promoted.
The club that finishes 3rd from bottom of the table enters a relegation play-off against the club finishing in 3rd place in the 2nd tier, with the winner of that play-off taking their place in the top tier for the next season.
Interestingly, unlike most top tier league competitions in the world of football, the winners of the Norwegian top flight are only declared ‘League Winners’ with the title of ‘National Champions’ given to the Norwegian Football Cup winner.
Whilst that puts the competition in line with the majority of domestic championships across Europe, the Eliteserien does stand out as it plays a mostly summer season instead of winter.
Each camepaign starts in March and the season ends in November and that makes it a popular competition for football fans to watch during the regular off-season, when only a limited amount of top flight football is available and if that is you, you can watch Norwegian football live online via the streaming services found on this page.
