League of Ireland

The League of Ireland Premier Division (Príomhroinn Sraith na hÉireann in Irish), is the top-flight football league in the Republic of Ireland.

The quality of football in the division has increased remarkably recently with teams finding success on the European front by not just qualifying for the Europa League but also picking up wins in the competition proper.

The great news for fans of Irish football is that you can watch many of the top matches from the League of Ireland Premier Division live online via our live streaming partners.

The League of Ireland Premier Division was first established in 1985 and during that time it has undergone reconstruction to where it is now a division of 10 teams, with the top 3 qualifying for European competition and the bottom 3 facing relegation to the League of Ireland First Division.

In 2003 the decision was made to switch the Premier Division to become a summer league and similarly to the Rugby League Super League over the Irish Sea, that has helped the quality of the action as teams now play on firm pitches and usually in better weather. It has also helped out teams in European action as they are at full fitness for the summer qualification period.

The division features 10 teams and acts as qualification for the Champions League and Europa League for Irish teams. With relegation to the League of Ireland First Division for those at the foot of the table.

There are currently 9 teams from the Republic of Ireland as well as Derry City who are from the city of Derry in Northern Ireland.

LOI Premier Division

When it comes to the Premier Division in the Republic of Ireland it is the big city teams who are the mainstay of the top flight as, just like most major sporting leagues, it is they who get the bigger attendances and the most sponsors which in turn allows them to sign the better players and have the better facilities.

Amongst the mainstays of the league are the like of Cork City (Cork), Sligo Rovers (Sligo), Derry City (Derry), Waterford (Waterford), Dundalk (Dundalk) and a host of teams from the Irish capital city of Dublin including the likes of Bohemians, Shelbourne, St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers.

Although quite a new competition by European football league standards, the topflight division in Ireland has already shown itself to be amongst the most competitive out there.

Whilst it cannot match the quality of so many other leagues and whilst it struggles to attract fans due to so many local supporters following the English Premier League or supporting one of the Glasgow giants, what the league can give is unpredictability.

With the league only running since the late 1980’s there have already been 7 teams to win the competition on more than one occasion with the likes of Dundalk, Shelbourne, St Patrick Athletic, Bohemians, Cork City and Derry City leading the way in terms of success and titles.

The competition, founded in 1985, it the top of the footballing pyramid in the Republic of Ireland and acts as a qualification competition for the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

The league also have relegation to the League of Ireland First Division which gives a fluid nature to the competition and with a relatively small group of teams, it means the majority of clubs have something to play for throughout the whole season.

It has been from improvements in the quality of the competition over the last decade or so and perhaps the switch to a summer league, that teams from the Republic of Ireland have started to show up more and more in European competitions proper and certainly in the latter parts of the qualification process.

Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk led the way in that regard as they qualified for the group stages, with the latter coming up against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and whilst the limited finances of LOI Premier Division teams mean that they do not qualify for European action proper every season, there is always that chance that when things click, and perhaps when they get a helpful draw in qualification, that the champions could get a chance to mix it with top teams and top players from across Europe.

Been a summer league means that when most clubs enter the qualification process for European football, the LOI teams are in full fitness and have been playing together for some time whilst other teams are still in pre-season levels of fitness and are having to get used to playing with new signings and /or new tactics from new managers.

With Irish teams improvements in Europe showcasing the league to many new eyes, it is no surprise that many new football fans are wanting to watch the competition, especially during the summer months when most other league are on their off season.

The good news it that no matter if you are an ardent fan of one of the leagues teams or if you are new to the League of Ireland Premier Division, you can watch all of the best action live online via our LOI Premier Division live stream partners.

Unfortunately the race for improved European success has come at a cost as many teams have started to spend more money and the league has turned full time professional and whilst the bigger clubs have managed to keep up with those demands, a number of smaller clubs have struggled with Sporting Fingal, Galway United and Monaghan United all withdrawing from the league.

Over the years the league has managed to attract a number of foreign players to Irish shores and that has continued to increase as playing budgets have gone up and as the league has turned professional but one of the great aspects of the competition has been its ability to create its own stars.

Players such as Stephen Geoghegan, Trevor Molloy, Jason Byrne, Glen Crowe, Gary Twigg and Sean Maguire have all become famous faces of the league and over the last decade more and more teams from across Scotland and England have started to scout the League of Ireland for potential new stars with Sean Maguire getting a move to the Championship off of the back of finishing top scorer for 2 seasons running.
