Whilst known simply as Benfica to fans throughout Europe and especially to those base din Britain, the clubs full name is actually Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Named after the district of Lisboa (Lisbon) the club are based in; they were first established back in 1904 simply as Sport Lisboa.

As one of the most widely supported clubs not just in Portugal but in the world, it is no surprise that they have been given a number of nicknames down the years by their fans including As Aguias (The Eagles), Os Encarnados (The Reds) and O Glorioso (The Glorious One).

If you were to ask a football fan to name a club side from Portugal it will be likely that they could name at least 3 sides; Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and Porto and that is with good reason.

Those 3 clubs, known locally as Os Tres Grandes (The Big 3), have been the domain force in Portuguese football but more than that, they have all enjoyed success in European action which has made them a household name across the continent.

Benfica have over 230,000 members and an expected supporter base of around 14 million fans across the globe which just highlights just how big a club they are currently and what the full potential of the club is.

That supporter base has led them to having the largest football stadium in Portugal and on the biggest in Europe as there Estadio da Luz (Stadium of Light) home ground in capable of holding over 64,000 fans.

The ground is known for its great atmosphere, which starts to build pre-match as an Eagles flies around the ground.

This is especially true on big match days, such as when Porto and Sporting Lisbon are in town as fans get to the ground early and sing and chant for hours.

The club are one of the most successful club side sin Portugal and in Europe having won all that there is to win domestically and many European trophies.

The club have a record breaking haul of Primeira Liga titles, multiples wins in the Taca de Portugal (the Portuguese version of the FA Cup), a number of Taca de Liga trophies as well as wins in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira and Campeonato de Portugal.

The club have won the European Cup / Champions League and have wins in the minor Latin Cup and Taca Ribeiro dos Reis.

As would expect form a club the size of Benfica, they have had a number of star players to have played for the club but perhaps most impressively is the number of stars that they have brought through their youth ranks and created into household names themselves.

The club also have invested in talent from across the globe with a focus on finding young talent in Brazil.

Star names to have played for the club include Jose Aguas, Nene, Jose Torres, Arsenio, Rogerio Pipi, Julinho, Jose Agusta, Oscar Cardoza, Nuno Gomes, Jonas, Mats Magnusson, Michael Manniche, Isaias, Lima, Eduardo Salvio, Kostas Mitroglou, Luisao, Rodrigo, Karel Poborsky, Simao and the mercurial Eusebio- one of the true superstars of the game and an icon of the 1960’s.

Football in Lisbon is a religion and the rivalry that they have with Sporting Lisbon is one of the fiercest in world football but it is also one of the most entertaining and atmospheric matches around and that makes it a great watch.

Whilst the clubs rivalry with FC Porto may not be as strong, the ground is always full and it is also a spectacle in itself and it is these games that the majority of those new to the Portuguese game start with but there is so much more to competition.

Watching Benfica against any team in domestic competition always gives you the chance of witnessing a magical moment as the focus in Portugal is on skill and ability over the rough and tough tackling of British football.

Whilst still one of the dominant forces at home, the rest of the league is catching up and that makes for competitive action week in and week out and that makes watching Benfica live more and more exiting for fans.

Best of all, it has never been easier to watch all of Benfica matches from domestic competitions live as our live stream partners bring you the action online.

History
The history of Benfica can be traced back to 1904 when a meeting was held to form a new football club and Sport Lisboa was born.

From the off, the club would wear there now iconic red and white playing strip and their crest/emblem would feature an eagle.

The clubs first ever match was in January 1905 but with their early results been poor, a number of players left the club to join Sporting Club to start their ongoing rivalry.

In 1908, the club merged with Grupo Sport Benfica and there name would change to Sport Lisboa e Benfica after the district of the Portuguese capital city the club were based in.

The early years of the cub would see them move around the district including Campo de Feiteira, Campo de Sete Rios and Campo de Benifca before settling at the Estadio das Amoreiras in 1925.

That would last for 15 years before the club move to the Estadio do Campo Grande, which came after the club started to enjoy their first period off success.

The national Portuguese league was established in 1934 and after they finished 3rd in the first season, they would win the next three league championships in a row.

The 1940’s would see lots of success for the club including league titles and domestic cups with their first success continentally coming in the Latin Cup when they defeating Bordeaux.

The club moved to their current Estadio da Luz home in the early 1950’s and enjoyed lots of success in the early years there.

There first European camepaign came in the 1957-58 season when they faced Sevilla and it didn’t take long for them to become the champions of Europe when they defeated Barcelona (1961) and Real Madrid (1962) in back to back seasons.

The 60’s also saw the club dominate things domestically including 8 league titles between 1959-60 and 1968-69.

The 70’s continued to see domestic dominance with 6 league titles between 1970-71 and 76-77 and in 1979, the club became the last professional Portuguese club to feature non domestic players, which only helped their dominance to continue into the 1980’s.

Unfortunately, that new ability to sign players from across the globe left the club with financial issues and that led to a poor 1990’s by their standards and a slow start to the new millennium including finishing 6th in the 2000-01 season.

Things did start t improve slowly after that but it was the arrival of Jorge Jesus that really kick started the club once more including 10 domestic trophies during his 6 years in charge.

In the 2016-17 season, the club would win their 4th league title on the trot which was their first ever tetra.
