History
Porto were formed in September 1893 as Foot-Ball Club do Porto by a local wine merchant who had become a fan of the sport on trips to England.
An early match saw the club take on Foo-Ball Club Lisbonense in 1894 in a match that had the patronage of Carlos 1 and Amelie of Orleans, the then King and Queen of Portugal.
By 1903, the clubs founder had started to lose interest and Porto were all but dormant until 1906 and with a new president in charge, the club rented a new pitch and named a new head coach.
In 1907, the club played its first game against a foreign club when they faced Real Fortuna of Spain and by 1912, they were one of the clubs pushing for a new Football Association and regional leagues in the country.
Porto finished their first season in the new league in 2nd place but then they would not only win the league the next season but they would win 6 of the next 7 trophies.
The 1921-22 season saw the creation of a nationwide competition in the country, where the winners of the regional divisions met in a play-off style knock out competition to decide a national champion.
After winning their regional league, Porto defeating Sporting Club from Lisbon to become the first ever national champions of Portugal.
The 1938-39 season saw a new national league championship which Porto not only won the inaugural event but they would back it up the next season.
The club would then go on a long run without another title but that ended in the 1955-56 season and in that same season, the club would win the Portuguese cup for their first domestic double.
Porto made their European debut in the 1956-57 European Cup but they were soon defeated by Athletic Bilbao from Spain.
The 1960’s was a lean period for the club and it wasn’t until the late 1970’s when the club would return to the top of the game in Portugal and also to start making there mark continentally.
They played in their first ever European final when they met Juventus in the Cup Winners Cup final is Basel but they lost the match 2-1.
They would return to the European Cup in the 1986-87 season which h saw them pick up their record continental win when they defeated Rabat Ajax of Malta 9-0.
That win came eon their way to the European Cup final, which they would defeat Bayern Munich in to pick the title of Champions of Europe for the first time.
The 1990’s saw lots of domestic success and good runs in European competitions although towards the end of the decade and at the start of the new millennium, the club became more of cup specialist in Portugal.
The new millennium also saw the arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach and with a number of future superstars in their squad, he would bring instant success to the club including winning the 2002-03 league title, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup trophy for the clubs first treble.
The club would go one better in Europe in the 2003-04 season as they would not only play in the Champions League but they would go onto win the trophy in a final against Monaco to become the Champions of Europe.
Life after Mourinho has seen the club still compete for titles and trophies domestically and win plenty to add to their trophy cabinet but they struggled to match the top clubs on the continent as they have become a selling club like most others not in the top 3 leagues in Europe.
