The green and white half of Lisboa are called Sporting Clube de Portugal but the majority of fans know them as Sporting Lisbon, Sporting Club or simply as SCP but no matter what you call them, they are one of the giants of the Portuguese game.

In Portugal there are 3 teams who have dominated the competition ever since organised football first started and those 3 teams go by the name of Tres Grandes (or the Big 3).

Unfortunately for fans of Sporting, they haven’t quite been able to match the success of the other 2 teams of Porto and Lisbon rival Benfica but by any other standard they have been a hugely successful club throughout their history.

That has led them to have a huge fanbase across the globe and well over 100,000 members, which in turn hassled them to having one of the largest stadiums in Portugal.

The Estadio Jose Alvalade is capable of holding more 50,000 fans and is regularly full when Porto and Benfica are in town or any other the other Lisbon based sides. The ground is known for its great atmosphere, especially on derby days.

History

The history of Sporting Club can be traced back to 1902 when a group of friends created the Sport Club de Belas football club.

Although they would only go on to play 1 game before disbanding, 2 of those friends started up another new club, called Campo Grande Football Club but as the club grew and they started to take up a number of community activities, a split built up and those wanting to focus on football left to form yet another club name Sporting Clube de Portugal.

It is therefore accepted that the 1st of July 1906 is the date that club were formed and it is from their when their true history starts.

In 1907, the club played their first ever match in a 5-1 loss to Cruz Negra in the third division. In the same year they open the Sitio das Mouras stadium and they also played there first derby against Benfica.

It took until the 1935 season for the club to reach the to tier of football in Portugal when they defeated Academica de Coimbra 0-6.

There early years saw lots of big scores with the 1936 seeing their biggest ever league win when they defeat Porto 10-1 but a year later they would lose to the same team 9-1.

There first ever golden era came mostly in the 1950s and 1960s, with that all been kick started in 1947 when they won their first ever league title to become the Champions of Portugal.

They would follow that up by winning 6 of the next 7 league championships and in that era they made history, alongside Partizan Belgrade, when they played the first ever UEFA Champions Clubs’ Cup match that ended with a 3-3 draw.

Sporting moved to their Jose Valvalade Stadium in June 1956, that would remain there home until 2003.
In the 1960’s, the club would make their mark on Europe by winning the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in the 1963-64 season.

The 1970’s saw continued domestic success and a run to the semi-final of the Cup Winners Cup in 1974 but sadly for fans of the club, the 1980’s saw the club start to struggle.

The decade did start well however as under the guidance of England’s Malcolm Allison, they won the league and cup double in 1982, the club had to wait until 1995 for them to win another domestic piece of silverware when they won the Portuguese Cup, although they did win the Portuguese Super Cup in 1987.

The new millennium started well for the green and white half of Lisbon when they won the 2000 league title to end an 18 year drought.

Unfortunately, they have spent much of the 2000’s struggling against their rivals Benfica and Porto and although they have spent lots of time in European competitions, they have also struggled with heavy debts and also off of the field issues including fans attacking players and leading to many leaving for free or cheap.

A new sign of improvement for the club occurred in the 2020-21 season when they won the Portuguese league cup and won their first league title after waiting for 19 years.
