Watch Viekkausliiga

If you are a fan of football, you will more than likely know it is fair to say that the Finnish top flight is not one of the leading competitions in European football.

It is not a competition full of big star players, massive clubs with huge fanbases and it does not have the finances to battle against clubs in other countries.

On thing the league does have the is capability of creating players and with many teams have strong scouting networks across Scandinavia, Europe and ever increasingly further afield to places such as Africa.

That adds some excitement to the action as you can never be sure of when you will see a player who goes onto be a star or a household names at a top club elsewhere in Europe.

The top flight of football in Finland is also a competition that is relatively even and that means that any club can beat any other club on their day and that always makes any competition an exciting one as unpredictability is often the key to fun and exciting sport and that is especially true on football where there is often the same teams battling it out for titles and trophies season in and season out no matter what the league or competition is.

That is not to say that there has not been clubs who have enjoyed dominant spells of winning in Finland and as you would expect it is teams from the countries biggest towns and cities that have been amongst the most successful.

That does tend to be the case around the world as it is these teams who have easier access to companies for sponsorship, more people living nearby to build a fanbase from and it also makes a club a better proposition for new signings, especially those coming from abroad.

No matter if you are an ardent fan of the league or one of the clubs that feature in it or you are just a football fan looking for a new and exciting experience, the great news is that you watch all of the great action from Finland live online via the Finnish football live streaming services found on this and whilst you do need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account to watch live via the online bookmakers that we feature, you can then pick and choose to watch the action that you want to watch live from Finland.

Amongst the biggest and most successful teams to ply their trade in the Finnish top flight, although do not forget with promotion and relegation in Finland this is always in a state of flux, are the likes of HJK (Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi or HJK Helsinki), FC Haka, KuPS (Kuopion Palloseura) and FC Kuusysi.
The majority of the stars from the league comes through the youth ranks of the teams but also from across Scandinavia and nearby countries such as Russia but the clubs also scout players from South America.

Arguably the biggest star to be produced from the league and to make a name for himself in English football who came through the system at MP (Mikkelin Palloilijat) before making a name for himself at the giants of HJK Helsinki and then FC Jokerit which grabbed the attention of Stockport County. History

HISTORY OF THE VEIKKAUSLIIGA

Before the Veikkausliiga: The origins of Finnish league football

The history of the Veikkausliiga begins long before the competition adopted its current name. Finnish football developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, eventually establishing a national championship that became the foundation of the modern professional game. Between 1908 and 1929, the Finnish men’s national championship was decided through a knockout cup competition rather than a conventional league system. This format meant that a single defeat could end a club’s hopes of winning the national title.

In 1930, Finland introduced a national league championship known as the Mestaruussarja, meaning Championship Series. The competition provided a more familiar league structure in which clubs competed over multiple matches to determine the national champion. Its development reflected the growing popularity of association football and the desire to establish a more comprehensive national competition.

The Mestaruussarja remained the top level of Finnish men’s football for decades, although its format and participating clubs changed over time. Football continued to develop alongside other popular Finnish sports, including ice hockey, athletics and cross-country skiing. Establishing a competitive national football structure helped clubs build local followings and created a pathway for talented players to progress towards the highest level.

1990: The birth of the Veikkausliiga

The modern Veikkausliiga was established in 1989, and its first season took place in 1990. The new competition replaced the Mestaruussarja as Finland’s premier men’s football league and represented a significant step towards a more commercially organised and professional domestic game. The competition was initially known as Futisliiga during its first two seasons, 1990 and 1991, before the Veikkausliiga name became established.

HJK, based in Helsinki, won the inaugural Veikkausliiga championship in 1990. That victory began a new chapter in the club’s already distinguished history and reinforced its position among Finland’s leading football institutions. HJK subsequently became the competition’s most successful team, earning a reputation for consistency, domestic ambition and regular participation in European qualification campaigns.

The creation of the Veikkausliiga also provided a clearer identity for the country’s leading clubs. A dedicated league organisation could focus on the needs of participating teams, players, commercial partners and supporters. Over time, the competition developed its own traditions, awards and public profile, becoming a central institution in Finnish football.

HJK and the development of a dominant club

HJK has played a defining role in Veikkausliiga history. The Helsinki club won the first championship in 1990 and accumulated numerous additional league titles over subsequent decades. Its success has made it a natural reference point when discussing the development and competitiveness of the Finnish top division. The club has also been a regular participant in European football, giving it experience against opponents from outside Finland.

HJK’s domestic success has not meant that the championship has belonged exclusively to Helsinki. FC Haka, KuPS, Tampere-based Ilves and several other clubs have contributed to the league’s history through championship challenges, cup success and memorable seasons. These competing traditions have helped maintain interest in the title race and ensured that Finnish football supporters have plenty of reasons to follow clubs beyond the capital.

HJK also became notable for its European achievements. In the 1998–99 UEFA Champions League season, the club reached the group stage, becoming the first Finnish team to achieve that milestone. The campaign placed Finnish club football on a larger European stage and remains an important reference point in discussions about the country’s footballing progress.

Changing competition formats and professional development

Since its foundation, the Veikkausliiga has undergone several changes to its format, participating teams and season structure. League organisers have adjusted the competition in response to sporting, commercial and practical considerations. The number of clubs has varied across different periods, while promotion and relegation have continued to connect the top division with the lower levels of Finnish football.

Finland’s climate has also influenced how the league operates. Unlike many major European competitions that begin in late summer and finish in spring, Veikkausliiga traditionally runs through the warmer months. This scheduling allows matches to be played during a more suitable period of the year and creates a distinctive rhythm for Finnish football. Clubs must nevertheless balance domestic fixtures with Finnish Cup commitments, player development and European qualification matches.

The competition has also become an important platform for developing players. Finnish footballers can gain first-team experience at home before pursuing opportunities abroad, while international players bring different tactical approaches and professional experience into the league. This exchange has helped shape the modern Veikkausliiga and broadened the range of playing styles seen in Finnish domestic football.

KuPS, Ilves and the modern championship race

In recent years, the championship race has featured several ambitious clubs seeking to challenge HJK’s historical dominance. KuPS, from Kuopio, has emerged as one of the strongest contenders, building on its established football tradition and sustained competitive performances. Ilves, representing Tampere, has also challenged near the top of the table, demonstrating the strength of clubs outside Helsinki.

The 2024 Veikkausliiga season provided a particularly notable result when KuPS won the championship, finishing ahead of Ilves, who claimed second place, and HJK, who finished third. This outcome illustrated that even the league’s most successful club can be overtaken by well-organised rivals with strong squads and effective recruitment.

That championship also underlined the importance of consistency across an entire campaign. In a league where teams compete through changing weather, varying playing surfaces and demanding fixture schedules, maintaining form is a substantial challenge. A strong start can build confidence, but the decisive moments often arrive when injuries, suspensions and pressure begin to test a squad’s depth.

The Veikkausliiga today

By the 2020s, the Veikkausliiga had established itself as the centre of Finland’s domestic men’s football system. The league combines historic clubs with newer professional projects, providing a competitive environment for established players and emerging talent. Its teams compete not only for the national championship but also for opportunities to qualify for European competitions, subject to the relevant qualification rules.

The 2025 season included the return of FF Jaro to the top division after a nine-year absence, while KTP also returned following promotion. These changes demonstrated the continuing movement between divisions and the importance of promotion and relegation in Finnish football. Clubs must build squads capable of surviving the demands of the top flight, while ambitious teams in the lower divisions pursue the opportunity to join them.

As the Veikkausliiga continues to evolve, its history remains closely connected to Finland’s wider sporting culture. From the knockout championships of the early twentieth century to the professional league established in 1990, Finnish football has developed through changes in organisation, competition and player development. HJK remains a major historical force, but KuPS, Ilves, Haka and other clubs continue to shape the competition’s identity.

The Veikkausliiga’s appeal ultimately lies in this combination of tradition and change. Every season adds another chapter to the records, rivalries and stories that define Finnish football. For supporters, historians and new international audiences alike, the league offers a fascinating look at a national competition that continues to develop while retaining its distinctive character.
