The Chinese Grand Prix is a round of the Formula 1 season that takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit near to the city of Shanghai in China.

The track is one of the most expensive ever built and thanks to its massive main grandstand that stretches don the main home straight, the course is also one of the most recognisable- especially of the new Tilke era tracks.

The track consists of 1 massive straight, 1 long straight and then a number of tight and twisty sections including an incredibly difficult turn 1 and 2 section that often creates chaos on the opening lap.

Shanghai Grand Prix

The race has been held since 2004 at the same track but the Chinese Grand Prix can track its history back to the early 1990’s when many venues and location were mooted as potential F1 tracks. A track was built in the southern China city of Zhuhai but the track failed to meet Formula 1 standards after been added to the 1999 F1 calendar.

It took until 2004 for the Chinese Grand Prix to debut in a race won by the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello.

There have been issues around the finances of the track almost from the off as it struggles for attendances and struggles to create the finances needed to break even or to even make a profit.

The track has given some great racing and big moments whilst not perhaps having a classic race to call its own.

Mercedes have been the domain team at the track since 2004 with Lewis Hamilton been the most dominant racer.

In 2019 the race hosted the 1000th round of the Formula One World Championship.
