As is so often the case for countries in the Commonwealth, many of the sports that have a big backing in the country comes from those that were taken there during the Victorian period.

That means on the global level it is sports such as Cricket, Tennis, Football and to a lesser extent Golf that Indian have enjoyed success at whilst other popular sports with a similar background, such as Rugby League, have started to grow and developed in parts of the country.

As a country with such a vast and varied population, it is no real surprise that sport in India is also varied, with a great mix of other team sports and individual sports.

Archery

One sport that has seen lots of success for Indian participants, both on the individual level and when they are representing the country as part of a national team, is Archery where the sport has really developed since the 1970’s and has now seen the country produce a number of world class competitors.

On the more local level, such as the Asian Games, Indian participants have enjoyed success in most parts of Athletics and that has sometimes made the step up to the more global level in events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.

Badminton

Badminton is one sport that has huge interest in the country and that has led to the national teams enjoying success at both the local and global level and both male and female participants and that is also the same for Field Hockey, that has long been one of the big success stories of India.

On the Asian continental level, the country have enjoyed some success in the sport of Basketball, again by both their women’s and men’s national teams.

Football

Football is a sport that so often dominate the sporting landscape in countries and especially those with strong links to the UK, such as India, but that hasn’t been the case for much of the history of the country.

The sport is hugely popular with fans but it is teams in the major leagues of Europe that most fans support and that has often left local teams under-supported and under-funded but over the last decade or so, the level of football in the country has continued to improve and that has led to improvements in the standard of the Indian national football team.

Golf

The sport of Golf has a growing level of interest and participation in the country and that has led to some success on the Asian tours and players moving over to both the PGA and European Tours but there are limited opportunities to play for your country in Golf.

Tennis

In a similar style of Golf, Tennis is a growing sport in more suburban and well-to-do parts of the country but it does also have an interest with the general public, especially when local players are playing in Grand Slams or in competitions such as the Olympics and/or the Asian Games.

Polo

Another popular sport with wealthier residents in the country is Polo and whist its popularity has seen many ups and downs, it continues to have a small but vibrant footing in the Indian sporting landscape.

Shooting

Although not a popular sport in terms of fans following it, Shooting does have a relatively large number of participants in the country and that has led to lots of success on the global level.

Volleyball

On the continent of Asia, the country are one of the leading forces in the sport Volleyball, where they are often ranked in the top 5 countries in the region but they often come up short on the global level in major tournaments.

Kabaddi

One of the most popular sports in the country is Kabaddi, where Indian is one of the few countries to have a professional domestic competition and that has helped them to become one of the most dominant countries on the international stage where they often win golf in big events such as the Asian Games.

Cricket

As mentioned above, it is in the part of Cricket that the country is a true global leader and it is the sport of Cricket that dominates things on both the national and individual state level in the country.

It is in Cricket that most of the countries sporting rivalries have been developed against countries such as Pakistan, Australia, South Africa and England and it is sport that countries leads the way with their domestic competition as the Indian Premier League attracts all of the big stars from across the globe with promises of riches.

The Indian national Cricket team have enjoyed success at the ODI level, at Test Match level, a T20 level and in 50 over matches and there national team are always one of the favourites to win any tournament, no matter what the competition is or where it is been played.

Traditional Sports

There are a number of traditional sports that have large followings in different regions across India but as they are only played in localised markets, there is no prospect of a national team competing.

Such sports include Yoga, Martial Arts, Board Games, Kho-kho, Lagoori, Kancha and Gilli-danda.
