ATP Atlanta

Taking place at the Atlantic Station complex in the American city of Atlanta, the match at the Atlanta Open are played on outdoor hard courts where the event is part of the US Open Series, a number of hard court event shield in the build up to the US Open.

The tournament was first established in Indianapolis back in 1988 but moved to the State of Georgia and the city of Atlanta in 2009.

The tournament was originally known as the Atlanta Tennis Championships but changed its name to the Atlanta Open in 2009.

Throughout the tournaments residence in Atlanta, the event has been dominated by American stars as the tournament has failed to attract the very top ranked players but that does make the Atlanta Open that bit more interesting as you can never be sure who will win and their tends to be lots of shocks.

Atlanta Tennis

The tournament overall holds a history dating back to the 1980’s but in its current guise it has been held in the city of Atlanta since 2009 but it has only been known as the Atlanta Open since 2012 after starting life in the state of Georgia as the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Previous to that the event was held in the city of Indianapolis but as a tournament it struggled to attract big names players, had a relatively low prize fund and thus struggled to sell tickets.

The right to host the event was sold to a business group in Atlanta who originally planned for the event to take place at the Atlanta Athletic Club, a private club in Johns Creek.

It only lasted until 2011 when the event moved to the Racquet Club of the South in the city of Atlanta itself but that only last a year before the now nomadic event found a permanent home for itself in the Atlantic Station neighbourhood.

Although it has established itself there, the tournament actually takes place in the main park of the residential district where temporary grandstands are built to give a capacity of around 4,000 during the event.

Throughout the tournaments time in the Georgia capital of Atlanta, it has been players from the United States who have dominated things with Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick and John Isner all picking up titles in Atlanta.

The tournament was somewhat of a home event for Isner, who although born in Dallas Texas, he went to university at the University of Georgia which is located close to the city.

In more recent times it has been Australians who have enjoyed success on the hard courts of the ATP Atlanta with both Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur winning.

There has been some British success at the tournament in the doubles event with Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray reaching the final in 2013, before losing to Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Igor Sijsling but in 2019 Dominic Inglot did pick up the title alongside home favourite Austin Krajicek with whom he defeated the iconic duo of Bob and Mike Bryan.

Kevin Anderson, Dudi Sela, Marcos Baghdatis, Ryan Harrison, Taylor Fritz, Scott Lipsky, Matthew Ebden, Xavier Malisse, Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey, Artem Sitak, John-Patrick Smith.

After missing out on the 2020 season, the event return to the tour in 2021 when it was John Isner who continued his success before Alex de Minaur picked up his second title in 2022.

History

As a relatively new tournament, the ATP Atlanta has already produced a number of interestingly moments and records that will be tough to break and thankfully for local fans in attendance, the majority of success at the event has come from local players from the USA.

Local Success

Starting at the first event, the final saw an all American line up when Mardy Fish defeated John Isner before Fish would go onto become the first player to defend his title when he defeated the same opponent a year later.

It didn’t take long for the big serving star to pick up his first title however when John Isner defeated Kevin Anderson in the 2013 final to start a run of 3 straight victories in Atlanta.

International Success

The 2016 final saw the first victory for a non-US player pick up the title when Nick Kyrgios of Australia defeated Isner in straight sets.

The next non-US star also came from down under when Alex de Minaur defeated Taylor Fritz to win the 2019 tournament.

Return of the Tournament

In 2021, the tournament returned from a year off but it was once again John Isner who stood out and picked up the title to make it an incredible 6 wins in all.
