Next Generation ATP Finals

The Next Generation ATP Finals, more commonly known as the Next Gen Finals, is a professional tennis tournament which is held at the end of the ATP World Toru season and is open to the top 7 ranked players aged 21 and under.

The tournament is similar to the end of season ATP Finals but it is there to show the quality of the youngers players on the tour and to also highlight the next generation of stars on the ATP Tour, hence the name.

The tournament was first held in 2017 when after a bidding process, the Association of Tennis Professionals (the ATP), the Italian Tennis Federation was chosen to be the first organisers of the new ATP Next Generation Finals event.

The city of Milan in the north of England was chosen as the host city for the first 5 years of the event, with the PalaLido (Palazzetto Lido Sport) been named as the host venue.

ATP Next Gen Finals Tennis

The tournament is open to the top 7 ranked players from the ATP Tour that are aged 21 and under and there is one spot left open for a wildcard.

The event uses a slightly different set up from a normal ATP Tour event, including a different format and changes to the rules.

Matches are played over 5 days with the players split into 2 groups of 4. The group stages features a round robin format, with each players playing against the other players from their group.

The top 2 ranked players after those games qualify for the semi-finals, with the 2 winners of those matches going onto the final, with the winner of that game picking up the Next Gen Finals title.

There are a number of rule changes at the event, most of which are aimed at speeding up the action and to modernise the sport.

> The matches are played over the best of 5 sets but the winner of the set is the first to get to 4 games instead of the usual 6.

> If the score gets to 3 games all in a set, there is a tie break.

> Hawkeye is used automatically on all close calls, with the decision shown on big screens.

> Matches start almost as soon as the players enter the court with no on court warm up and/or preparation time.

> A shot clock is used to track the length of time between points with a maximum of 25 seconds allowed.

> Only 1 medical time out per player is allowed for each matches but coaches can talk to their players during breaks through headsets.

> There are towel boxes at each baseline and the players can use wearable technology.

As you would expect from a tournament that has a huge turnover in players, as the top stars from the year above will likely be too old for the next edition, the event has seen a different winner for the first 3 events, although Alex de Minaur of Australia did make it to the final of both the 2018 and 2019 edition of the AT Next Generation Finals.

South Korea’s Chung Hyeon was the first winner of the new tournament in 2017 when he defeated Andrey Rublev in 4 sets.

ATP Next Gen Finals

The tournament does not offer any ranking points and is the final tournament of the year for the players but it does offer a lot of prestige and a huge prize fund.
