ATP Cordoba Open
The Cordoba Open, formerly knowns as the Ecuador Open and the Ecuador Open Quito, is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP Tour where it is an ATP World Tour 250 Series ranked event that moved from the Ecuadorian city of Quito in 2019 to the Argentine city of Cordoba.
Matches are played in the city of Argentine city of Cordoba on outdoor clay courts.
The tournament joined the ATP Tour back in 2015 when it replaced the defunct WTR Open in nearby Chile but professional tennis in the city of Quito can be traced back to the Quito Open which was held between 1979-1982.
It was only a short lived stay in Quito however as the event was soon on the tour once more, with the whole event uprooting to Argentina.
Since been re-established the tournament has been dominated, as you would expect, by clay court specialists and whilst to relatively low-ranking points and prize fund on offer means few top 10 stars appear, it does give a chance to lesser known players to show off their skills and for clay court specialists to excel early in the season.
Cordoba Open Tennis
The Cordoba Open was inaugurated in 2019 as part of the Latin American Golden Swing of the ATP Tour.
This new formation of tournaments held in Latin America has made for a much more attractive proposition for stars to make their way down to South America, although it has still been local stars who have enjoyed success in the event.
The Golden Swing started life in 2001 and was named in honour of the Chilean duo of Nicolas Massu and Ferando Gonzalez after their incredible Olympic gold medal winning performance.
Their have always been 4 tournaments that make up the Golden Swing, although the exact tournaments have changed as events come and go throughout the region.
The ATP Cordoba Open joined the Golden swing upon in inauguration in 2019 as it took over from the Ecuador Open Quito.
The inaugural event saw an all Argentine final as Juan Ignacio Londero defeated Guido Pella at the Cordoba Lawn Tennis Club.
The tennis complex features a number of clay courts, grass courts and makes up a small part of a larger sporting complex, just to the south east of the city centre of Cordoba.
Perhaps best known as a football stadium, which houses the professional clubs Belgrano, Instituto and Racing, the stadium rose to prominence as a host of the football world cup in Argentina.
The city of Cordoba is located in central Argentina, in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas on the Suquia River and around 450 miles to the northwest of the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires.
As you would expect, the city is the capital of the Cordoba Province but perhaps most importantly from the tennis tournaments point of view is that it is the 2n most populous city in Argentina after the capital, which helps to attract a good size crowd for matches at the ATP Cordoba Open.
As a relatively small tournament with often a lack of star power and with an awkward time difference, it is perhaps not too surprisingly that it is difficult for fans in Britain to watch live action from the ATP Cordoba on television.
A tournament such as the ATP Cordoba Open, with a 250 Series ranking and a relatively small prize fund on offer is a great opportunity for lower ranked players and youngsters to mix it up with established pro’s and some top players but from a fans point of view that also gives us an opportunity to see new match up and the potential for huge shocks.
As a tournament for clay court specialists, you can also be assured of lots of skill, lots of spin on shots and lots of great rally’s that will take you back to days when only those the most proficient on clay courts could win the big tournaments.
Even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel, their will only be a limited selection of matches, at best, from the event shown live but thankfully there is now a new and much better way to way tennis live.
