Open Sud de France
No matter if you know it as the Open Sud de France or the ATP Montpellier, the tennis tournament that takes place at the Montpellier Arena and that takes place on the men’s ATP Tour is a great event featuring the best of local talent competing against challengers from across the globe.
The tournament takes place early in the season and is one of the first tournaments that many of the players will take part in for any given season and that can lead to some unpredictable matches and outcomes with high ranking big names who perhaps come into the tournament rusty coming up against lower ranked players who have really put in the hard yards during off season training.
As with all things in sport however, it does tend to be the top stars that progress no matter how rusty they are and that has led to many superstars and household names picking up the title and trophy.
Amongst the more famous names to win the Open Sud de France in Montpellier include Tomas Berdych (from the Czech Republic), Alexander Zverev (from Germany), Richard Gasquet, Lucas Pouille, Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (who are all from the host nation of France).
History
Before moving to the city of Montpellier, the event originally was held in the city of Lyon between 1987 to 2009, with early winners from Lyon including the likes of John McEnroe, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras (all from the United States of America), Arnaud Clement, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Sebastien Grosjean (all home favourites from France), Yevgeny Kafelikov (from Russia), Rainer Schuttler (from Germany), Robin Soderling (from Sweden), and Ivan Ljubicic (from Croatia).
As with the majority of tennis tournaments that take place on the men’s ATP Tour, the leading tennis our for men, this tournament also features a double event alongside the singles event and whilst a number of players do double duty and play on both sides of the draw, the doubles event also features a number of specialist teams, which has led to some success for British players.
Ken and Neal Skupski won the doubles event in 2018, whilst Jamie Murray (in 2012 alongside Australia’s Paul Hanley)and Dominic Inglot (in 2015 alongside Romania’s Florin Mergea and in 2020 alongside Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi) have both reached the final in losing efforts.
In the 2022 edition of the event, the final saw Alexander Bublik of Uzbekistan pick up his first ever ATP Tour singles title when he defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany.
Fans in attendance had more to cheer in the doubles event when local favourites Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut defeated Lloyd Glasspool (Britain) and Harri Heliovaara (Finland) to pick up the silverware.
