Rogers Cup
The Canadian Open, also known as the Rogers Cup and the Canada Masters, is a professional tennis tournament which features jointly on both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.
On the men’s tour the event is a Masters 100 ranked event, the second highest level of tournament behind the 4 Grand Slams and on the women’s tour it is a Premier 5 tournament.
Uniquely the tournament is held in 2 separate venues in 2 separate cities with the women’s tournament held in one venue and the men’s held in the other. The events switch between Montreal and Toronto from one year to the next with the men’s tournament held in Montreal during odd numbered years.
In Toronto, the tournament takes place at the Aviva Centre and in Montreal matches take place at the Uniprix Stadium. Both parts of the tournament are held on hard courts and both attract the very biggest names in the tennis world.
The tournament offers big ranking points, a large prize fund and the chance for players to build form and confidence ahead of the US Open so it is no surprise that the winners of both sides of the Canadian Open come from the top 10 ranked players.
The event has a long history, with the first edition been held way back in 1881 at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club. Of the major tournaments, still in existence only Wimbledon and the US Open has a longer history. Initially played on grass, the tournament then switched to clay until 1979 when it became a hard-court event.
It is now classified as part of the US Open Series, a number of events in North America that are played on hard court and act as ‘warm-up’ matches for the US Open- the final Grand Slam Major tournament of the tennis season.
WTA Canadian Open
The women’s side of the draw is known as either the WTA Toronto or the WTA Montreal, depending on where the event is taking place but no matter what the name of the event, you can be assured of lots of great action and plenty of star names to watch.
The tournament offers lots of ranking points, a huge prize fund and big crowds, so it no surprise that the event is seen as one of the biggest outside of the Grand Slams and why it is a must watch for any tennis fan.
The tournament was dominated by Canadian stars in the early years, with a few other winners from the USA and Mexico but as with the majority of tournaments, the open era has seen stars from across the globe pick up the title.
The strength of any event can often be best judged by looking at the players who have gone on to win the event and that is something that the event has lots to brag about with household names such as Chris Evert (USA), Tracy Austin (USA), Martina Navratilova (USA), Steffi Graf (Germany), Jennifer Capriati (USA), Martini Hingis (Switzerland), Serena Williams (USA), Amelie Mauresmo (France), Justine Henin (Belgium), Kim Clijsters (Belgium), Ana Ivanovic (Serbia), Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland), Simona Halep (Romania) and Bianca Andreescu (Canada).
In recent times, it has been Romania’s Simona Halep who has enjoyed the most success with wins at the 2016, 2018 and 2022 editions whilst home favourite Bianca Andreescu winning the 2019 to send the home fans home happy for the first time in decades.
As with the majority of tournaments on the main WTA Tour, the Canadian Open also offers a doubles event alongside the singles event and the great news for all tennis fans is that you can also watch action from the doubles event.

ATP Canadian Open
The men’s side of the Canadian Open is known as either the ATP Toronto or the ATP Montreal, depending on where the event is been played, but just like the women’s event, it doesn’t matter where the action is taking place, the quality of action is always strong.
The men’s event is one of the biggest tournament outside of the 4 Grand Slams and offers huge ranking points, lots of prestige and a massive prize fund and that, along with big crowds and a placement on the calendar close to the US Open and you have every needed for a great tournament which is something that the Rogers Cup often delivers on.
The men’s side of the draw has followed a similar path to the women’s as the early years were dominated by Canadian and American stars in the early years before stars from across the world picking up the title throughout the open era.
Once again the winners of the tournament is nearly a who’s who of the open era with the likes of Ilie Nastase (Romania), Bjorn Borg (Sweden), Ivan Lendl (Czech Republic), John McEnroe (the United States of America), Boris Becker (Germany), Andre Agassi (the united States of America), Pat Rafter (Australia), Andy Roddick (the United States of America), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Rafael Nadal (Spain), Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Alexander Zverev (Germany) and Britain’s own Andy Murray all picking up the title.
Over the past couple of decades, many of the sports biggest stars have not only taken to the court at the Canadian Open but they have come away with the title including the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer.
Recently it has been Spanish stars that have enjoyed success, with Nadal winning in 2018 and 2019 whilst his compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta winning the 2022 edition with Daniil Medvedev of Russia breaking that run in 2021.
The men’s ATP Toronto and ATP Montreal also offer doubles fans the chance to watch both doubles specialists and singles stars partnering up in doubles action and you can watch all of that great action live online.
