History
The Madrid Open has been a relatively short one for such a high ranking and important event but as it started at the top of the sport, there has been no small shortage of major match ups and big stories- including those now infamous blue clay courts.
It also got off to an inconspicuous start when the first men’s finals featured a walkover for Andre Agassi with Kiri Novak pulling out.
ATP Action
That was in 2002 but in the very next season’s final, the fans in attendance went home happy as the first Spanish winner of the event was crowned when Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Nicolas Massu of Chile in straight sets.
Russia’s Marat Safin and Argentina’s (2004) David Nalbandian (2007) did manage to pick wins over the next couples of decades but as has been the case at some many tournaments on the men’s ATP Tour, it has been the big 4 of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer who have dominated things in Madrid, although Germany’s Alexander Zverev has led the fightback recently.
The 2022 edition saw local success with Carlos Alcaraz defeating Alexander Zverev of Germany in the final.
WTA Action
The women’s side of the event did not get under way until the 2009 season but since then there has been a good spread of winners with Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep all winning on more than one occasion.
It was Russia’s Dinara Safina who won the inaugural event by defeating Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets whilst Aryna Sabalenka defeating Ashleigh Barty in the 2021 season as the tournament came back onto the tour after missing out on the 2020 season.
The 2022 edition of the WTA side of the event saw Ons Jabeur of Tunisia defeat Jessica Pegula of the USA in the final to pick up the title.
