WTA Albany

The WTA Albany Open is a new professional tennis tournament that takes place on the women’s WTA Tour where it has a new role on the tour as a warm up event for the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open.

The tournament started life from the ashes of the WTA Quebec City tournament which ceased to exist and that this tournament took over its place on the calendar.

The new location of the tournament, just to the north of New York City in New York State makes it a great location for the tournament to attract a handful of stars looking for a final tune up before the US Open.

With that in mind it will come as no surprise that the tennis played at the tournament is played on hard courts, with everything tried to be kept to a similar setting and style as that found down the Interstate 87 at Flushing Meadows- the home of the US Open in Queens.

It is perhaps a little known fact outside of the US, or even the North East USA, that the city of Albany is the capital of New York State and as a city located roughly half way between New York City, Montreal, Toronto and the New York cities of Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester, it is the ideal place for a smaller tennis tournament as it can attract fans from across the state.

That also makes it a relatively well supported and friendly tournament as whilst the nearby US Open attract not just fans but those wanting to be seen at a major sporting event, this is a tournament just for fans and just for purists of the sport.

The area around where Albany is located is known as the Capital Region and it is not the first tournament to be held in this part of New York State but it has been quite some time since the demise of the former OTB Open which ended in 1994.

That tournament, also known as the OTB International Open ran from 1985-1994 and also acted as a warm up event for the US Open.

The current tournament to be held in the region, the Albany Open, is an International level event so whilst that makes it a relatively low ranking event with a relatively low prize fund, the closeness to Flushing Meadows and the fact that it is a great chance to build form and momentum ahead of the US Open, the tournament attracts a better quality playing field that you would expect from a tournament at the same level, especially as it has little to no history and prestige around it.
