WTA Budapest
The Hungarian Open is a professional tennis tournament that takes place of the women’s WTA Tour where it is a WTA International level event.
First established back in 1993, the tournament has undergone lots of changes including to its name, to its location, the surface that it has been played on, its ranking and tour status and the event has even spent time off of the tour.
Form the tournaments establishment to 2016, the action took place on outdoor clay courts but the decision was made to change to a hardcourt surface in 2017.
That saw the tournament move to the European Tennis Center in the Hungarian capital city of Budapest which is the where the tournament remains.
The inaugural tournament was won by Zian Garrison of the United States of America who defeated Sabine Appelmans of Belgium to pick up the first title in Hungary and become the first European winner of the event but that was unfortunately the last tournament until 1996 as the event dropped off of the tour for the first time.
On the tournaments return to the WT Tour it was Ruxandra Dragomir who win the title by defeating Melanie Schnell of Austria.
The tournament remained on the tour until 2014, with winners during this era of the competition including the likes of Amanda Coetzer (of South Africa who own the 1997 edition to become the first champion from Africa), Magdalena Maleena (of Bulgaria who won the 2001 edition), Jelena Jankovic (of Serbia who won the 2004 edition), Anna Smashnova (of Israel who won the 2005 and 2006 editions to become the first winner to defend her title in Hungary), Agnes Szavay (who become the first Hungarian to win the title and interesting won back to back tournaments in 2009 and 2010 by defeating the same player, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, in the finals) and Simona Halep (of Romania).
In 2014 the tournament dropped off of the WTA Tour and was not held at all before returning on the secondary ITF Tour in 2016 when Elitsa Kostova defeated Viktoriya Tomova in an all Bulgarian final.
The tournament then stepped up to the main WTA Tour in 2017 when home favourite Timea Babos became the second winner from Hungary before Alison Van Uytvanck won back to back events in 2018-2019.
As with the majority of tennis tournaments on the WTA Tour, the Hungarian Open also features a doubles evet alongside the singles event which features a good mix of both doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty.
It has been in the doubles event that has seen the best performance from a British star when Heather Watson, alongside her partner Fanny Stollar (of Hungary) were runners up in the 2019 final after losing to the Russian duo of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Vera Zvonareva.
The 2021 edition of the event saw Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan defeat Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, with the 2022 edition seeing Bernarda Pera of the USA defeat Aleksandra Krunic in the final.
