WTA Istanbul
The Istanbul Cup, also known as the WTA Istanbul, is a professional tennis tournament that as you would expect, takes place in the iconic Turkish city of Istanbul.
The tournament was first established back in 2005 and whilst that may make you think that the event is now established and it has found its place, it has been a tournament of changes throughout most of its existence.
From the launch of the event, in 2005 up until 2009 the matches at the Istanbul Cup were played on outdoor clay courts.
From 2009 up until 2011, the tournaments organisers decided that the event would be become an outdoor hard court event.
That did not last for long however as the WTA Istanbul didn’t feature on the tour between 2011-2013 as the decision was made to not run the tournament due to the city also hosting the end of season WTA Tour Championships.
In 2014 the tournament got back under way and started off where the last running ended with the action on hard courts but once more, that did not last long and the decision was made to change to outdoor clay courts once more.
It is perhaps no surprises that with all of those change above, there has been no one player to dominate things in Turkey.
In the 2021 edition of the cup, it was Sorana Cirstea who picked up a shock win by defeating Elise Mertens in the final whilst the 2022 edition saw an all-Russian final but with both participants playing under a neutral flag.
The tournament is a WTA International level event and with only a relatively small prize fund, it is no surprise that the tournament struggles to attract a host of household names but you get a good mix of top 10 players, solid pros and young up and coming potential stars of the future.
That allows for the tournament to bring fans some match ups that have never been seen before and lots of great action but unfortunately it can be a tournament that often goes overlooked and that can be difficult to watch live on tv in Britain.
