Ladies Open Lausanne Tennis

The Ladies Championship Lausanne, formerly known as the Swiss Open and the European Open, is a professional tennis tournament played on the women’s WTA Tour and the great news for fans is that you can watch all of the action live online via our tennis live stream partners.

The tournament is actually one of the oldest professional tennis events still on the world tour as it can trace it routes back to 1899 although as well as a number of name changes, the event has also gone through a number of venues and long periods of not been played altogether.

Between 1899-1994, the event was known as the Swiss Open and was played on outdoor clay courts at a number of venues across Switzerland including Gstaad, Lugano, Geneva and Lucerne.

The tournament moved to its current location of Lausanne in 2019 where the inaugural Ladies Championship Lausanne was won by French star Fiona Ferro who defeated Alize Cornet in the final.

The event is a now a WTA International ranked event and has quickly returned to been a must watch event on the women’s world tennis tour.

WTA Lausanne

The now known as Ladies Open Lausanne is a long standing tournament that has enjoy a nomadic life for much of its existence and it has also undergone a number of name changes, ranking changes, and even been taken off of the tour.

None of that however can take away from the history and prestige of the tournament that is also known as the WTA Lausanne, which can be dated way back to 1899, although it could also be said that the event that runs today was only inaugurated in 2016.

That is because the tournament left the tour between 1995-2016 but no matter how you view things, the current tournament is a WTA Tour event that is well worth watching for all fans of tennis.

The current tournament is a WTA International level event where all of the action takes place on outdoor red clay courts and so as you would expect it attracts a host of lay court specialists which when mixed with a handful of top stars and you have a tournament set up to entertain.

The tournament was initially known as the WTA Swiss Open when it was mostly a local event but as with the majority of tournaments, the open era brought about a new international flavour.

Then 1969 edition kicked off the open era and was held in the city of Gstaad where French star Francoise Durr defeated Rosie Casals to pick up the title.

Gstaad hosted 9 events which included a win for British star Glynis Coles in 1975, when she defeated Linky Boshoff of South Africa.

In 1981, the event moved to Lugano where Chris Evert of the USA won the first 2 events.

1987 saw another change of venue for the tournament when the move to Geneva was decided upon. It was only a short stay here however with a dip in the quality of participants which included Barbara Paulus win the first Geneva based tournament.

Lucerne was the next host location for the next 3 years which were dominated by USA stars with Amy Frazier winning the first event before Lindsay Davenport won back to back events.

As mentioned the tournament then disappeared from the WTA Tour for 2 decades before returning in 2016 when Gstaad hosted the event first won by Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

The next move was to Lausanne, from where the event is currently held.

As with the vast majority of tournaments held on the WTA Tour, the WTA Swiss Open also features a doubles events which includes singles players doing double duty and doubles specialists.

The 2021 edition saw Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia win the singles event whilst Croatian Petra Martic won the 2022 title.
