WTA Luxembourg
The Luxembourg Open, also known simply as the WTA Luxembourg, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the women’s WTA Tour.
The tournament is hosted by the beautiful town of Kockelscheuer, which is located in the Roeser commune in the south of the small Central European country.
The town only has a population in the hundreds, which make it amongst the smallest to host a professional tennis tournament but as a popular place for holidaymakers, the fans at the event tend to be amongst the most ardent tennis fans.
It will come as no surprise therefore that the tournament is one of the lowest ranked events on the WTA Tour, where it is currently a WTA International level event and it also offers one of the smaller prize funds but thanks to its great location, many big names are attracted to the event held at the Kockelscheuer Sport Centre.
All of the matches are played on indoor hard courts in the compact sports centre where fans are right next to the action, which helps to create a great atmosphere.
Down the years the tournament has held a number of different rankings including the first 5 edition which were held as Exhibition events, before it joined the main tour.
The inaugural event was held way back in 1991 and featured Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic as the first title winner after she defeated Judith Wiesner of Austria in the final.
Novotna went on to defend her title the next year when she defeated Leila Meskhi of Georgia in the final.
The 1993 and 1994 editions were also both won by the same player as Martina Navratilova picked up back to back victories against Mary Joe Fernandez (of the USA in 1993) and Arantxa Sanchez (of Spain in 1994).
The final exhibition event was won by Sabine Appelmans of Belgium who defeated Mary Pierce of France in the final.
In 1996, the tournament became a Tier III ranked event and featured Anke Huber as the first title at the new level after she defeated Barbara Paulus to pick up the title.
The event stayed at this level for 9 editions, with the winners during this era been Amanda Coetzer (of South Africa who won in 1997), Mary Peirce (of France who won in 1998), Jennifer Capriati (of the USA who own in 2000), Alicia Molik (of Australia who won in 2004) and Kim Clijsters (who dominated the era by winning the 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003 editions).
It was therefore apt that as the tournament stepped up to a Tier II level event in 2005, it was Kim Clijsters who won the first edition at that level by defeating Anna-Lena Gronefeld (of Germany) in the final to pick up the title.
The tournament only stayed at this level for 3 years with Alona Bondarenko (of the Ukraine in 2006) and Ana Ivanovic (of Serbia in 2007) been the other winners before the tournament stepped back down to a Tier III level event for one year when Elena Dementieva (of Russia) won the title.
In 2009, the tournament became a WTA International level event with Timea Bacinszky (of Switzerland) winning the first edition at this level by defeating Sabine Lisicki (of German) in the final to pick up the title.
Other winners during this period including Roberta Vinci (of Italy who won in 2010), Victoria Azarenka (of Belarus who won the 2011 edition), Venus Williams (of the United States of America who won the 2012 edition), Caroline Wozniacki (of Denmark who won in 2013), Annika Beck (of Germany who won in 2014), Misaki Doi (of Japan who won in 2015), Monica Niculescu (of Romania in 2016), Carina Witthoft (of Germany in 2017), Julia Gorges (of Germany in 2018) and Jelena Ostapenko (of Latvia in 2019).
As with the majority of tennis tournament son the women’s WTA Tour, the Luxembourg Open also offers a doubles event that can also be watched live.
The double side of the tournament features a mix of both doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty.
If you are a tennis fan, you will more than likly know that it can be a frustrating experience trying to watch tournament such as the Luxembourg Open that only have a relatively low ranking on the tour due to a lack of interest from the media and tv companies.
Even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that have the right to tennis coverage, the chances are that you will only get a select number of matches from the tournament at best and that can often means that fans miss out on their favourite player or on the match up that they are most looking forward to.
