WTA San Jose

The Silicon Valley Classic, also known as the WTA San Jose, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the women; s WTA Tour where it is a WTA Premier level event.

As you would expect, the tournament takes place in the Californian city of San Jose with the matches been played on outdoor hard courts on the grounds of the San Jose State University.

The tournament has a long history dating back to the early 1950’s and whilst it has undergone a number of changes down the years, the tournament remains one of the leading WTA Tour events held in the USA.

The now Silicon Valley Classic was established in 1971 and for much of the first 2 decades of the event, it was local stars from the USA that were the dominant force at the tournament starting with Billy Jean King, who won the inaugural tournament in 1971 by defeating compatriot Rosemary Casals in the first final before going onto win 3 of the first 4 tournaments.

Other players to go on to win the event more than once during the opening couple of decades includes Chris Evert (United States), Martina Navratilova (United States), Andrea Jaeger (United States), Hana Madilkova (Czech Republic) and Zina Garrison (United States).

The 1977 was a noticeable year for British stars when Sue Barker defeated Virginia Wade in a an all-British final.

For the 1990 edition of the tournament, the event became a Tier II level event and whilst this era of the competition saw a wider mix of nationalities winning, it was still stars from the USA that enjoyed lots of success.

The first winner of the tournament at the new standing was Monica Seles, who was then representing Yugoslavia, who defeated Martina Navratilovain the final.

The 2 swapped wins in the first 4 finals before stars of the game including the likes of Martini Hingis (of Switzerland who won in 1996 and 1997), Lindsay Davenport (of the USA who won in 1998, 1999 and 2004), Venus Williams (of the United States who won in 2000 and 2002) and Kim Clijsters (of Belgium who won in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006).

In 2009, the event become a Premier level tournament in the WTA Tour, which has led to the competition been even tougher for those involved with stars from cross the globe battling it out for the title.

The first winner at this ranking was Marion Bartoli of France who defeated Venus Williams of the USA in the 2009 final.

Other winners of the event during the Premier ranked years have included the likes of Victoria Azarenka (of Belarus in 2010), Serena Williams (of the USA in 2011, 2012 and 2014), Angelique Kerber (of Germany in 2015) whilst the 2016 final was won by Johanna Konta to give the tournament a British winner once again after she defeated local favourite Venus Williams in the final to lift the title.
