AC Milan v Inter Milan
AC Milan take on Internazionale in the Milan Derby in this match up from Serie A in Italy and the great news for all fans of Italian football is that you can watch all of the action live via our Serie A live streaming partners.
Known as the Derby della Madonnina or the Derby di Milano in Italian or simply as the Milan Derby in English, this is a derby match in every sense of the world.
Not only are AC Milan and Inter Milan amongst the biggest clubs in Italy who have frequently battled for trophies domestically and in Europe and not only are they both from the same city but they share the same stadium- local rivalries don’t get much closer than that!
Both clubs have featured some of the biggest stars in the game down the years whilst the Red and Black kit of AC Milan and the Blue and Black stripes of Internazionale are also amongst the most recognisable in world football.
Historically, AC Milan were the club of the upper and middle class in Milan whilst Inter Milan were the club of the working class with AC Milan known as Bourgeoisie and Inter nicknamed Casiavid.
Whilst those barriers have been broken down over the years, it still does go a long way to breaking down the fanbases with AC Milan’s fans coming from the richer parts of the city of Milan.
This long rivalry can be dated back to the 10th January 1909 when the teams first met, on that occasion AC Milan came out 3-2 winners but with 2 league matches a season plus Coppa Italia, European, friendly and minor tournament matches played regularly between the 2, the bragging rights are constantly crossing the city.

Stadium
The Giuseppe Meazza or the San Siro as there shared stadium is more commonly known as, is one of the true iconic stadiums in world football.
Whilst it can be argued that the stadium has seen better days and that it fails to live up to the standards of newer grounds, nobody can say that on derby day the stadium fails to live up to the hype and the importance of the match.
With the sold out signs up, the Milan Derby matches are played out in front or loud and fanatical fans and whilst sometimes it does cross the line, most of the time the stadium and fans simply gives the players the right theatre to produce a great game.
Why You Should Watch
This is simply one of the biggest matches on the footballing calendar and whilst both sides may not be able to offer superstar line ups, the importance of this match means both sides play to their best. With nothing but a win acceptable to both sets of fans, neither team can sit back and play for the draw which often leads to entertaining games that matches the spectacle in the stands.

Rivalry
When it comes to world football there are few derbies that have the heat, passion, and bitter local pride on the line as this one has and that helps to create the perfect setting for the star players to perform to their best and give not just the fans of both of these Milan giants 90 minutes of exciting action but it is also a must watch game for all football fans in general.
Although the battles between the city rivals are known outside of Italy and especially over here as the Milan Derby (or the Derby di Milano), for local fans the game goes by the name of Derby della Madonnina, which is in honour of the statue of the Virgin Mary, which sits atop of the Duomo (Milan Cathedral) which is colloquially known as the Madonnina (Little Madonna).
The adding of the religious element to these match ups is fitting as football is often thought of as a religion in Italy and with the importance of these matches been so strong for both sets of fans, it is often a heavily experience for the winning side.
Whilst locally this is a rivalry built about local and civic pride in the city of Milano, these 2 are not only giants of the domestic Italian football scene but they are also giants of the European club scene but the match is no less importance to fans based further afield.
As two of the top clubs in Italy, the outcome of the matches not only affect those living locally but it also has a huge say on things nationally as the 2 sides tend to be battling it out towards the top of the table and at the business end of cup competitions and that makes each and every match hugely important for footballing reasons and creates incredible interest from fans of all clubs.

History
The Origins of AC Milan v Inter
Few football rivalries have the history, glamour and sheer drama of AC Milan v Inter. Known as the Derby della Madonnina, the clash between Milan’s two biggest clubs is one of the most famous fixtures in world football. It takes its name from the Madonnina statue that sits atop Milan Cathedral, a fitting symbol for a derby that has divided the city for more than a century.
The rivalry began in 1908, when a breakaway group from Milan Cricket and Football Club formed Internazionale. The first official Derby della Madonnina followed on 10 January 1909, with AC Milan winning 3-2. From that moment onwards, the fixture became a regular part of Milanese football life. UEFA notes that the derby was born from this split within the original club, giving the rivalry a rather more complicated family tree than your average football feud.
A Rivalry Built on Success
What makes the history of AC Milan v Inter particularly fascinating is that both clubs have enjoyed enormous success, both domestically and in European competition. AC Milan have won the European Cup and UEFA Champions League seven times, while Inter have lifted the trophy three times, most recently in 2010. That means this is not simply a local derby between two successful Italian sides; it is a meeting between two European heavyweights.
Over the decades, the derby has featured some of football’s greatest names. Giuseppe Meazza, Andriy Shevchenko, Paolo Maldini, Javier Zanetti, Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio are just a handful of legendary players to have worn the colours of one or, occasionally, both clubs. Shevchenko remains AC Milan’s leading scorer in the derby with 14 goals, while Meazza scored 13, including 12 for Inter. Apparently, even Milan’s footballing heroes could not resist crossing the city divide.
The Derby Goes European
For much of its history, AC Milan v Inter was primarily a domestic battle, but the rivalry reached another level when the clubs met in European competition. Their first Champions League semi-final meeting came in 2002/03, producing one of the most famous European derby encounters ever played.
The two-legged semi-final was remarkably tense. The first match ended 0-0, while the second finished 1-1, with Milan progressing on away goals. Because both clubs shared the San Siro, the occasion had the slightly surreal feeling of playing an away match without actually leaving town. Milan went on to win the Champions League final against Juventus.
The sides met again in the 2004/05 Champions League quarter-finals. Milan won the first leg 2-0 and completed the job with a 1-0 victory in the return fixture. Andriy Shevchenko scored in both games, while the second leg was abandoned after crowd trouble, adding yet another bizarre chapter to the derby’s already enormous history.
Modern AC Milan v Inter Matches
The rivalry has remained fiercely competitive in the modern era, with both clubs experiencing periods of dominance. Inter enjoyed a particularly strong spell under Antonio Conte, winning four of five derby matches against Milan between 2019 and 2021. Milan, however, have enjoyed a strong response in more recent meetings.
In November 2025, AC Milan defeated Inter 1-0 thanks to a Christian Pulisic goal, while Mike Maignan saved a penalty. That result extended Milan’s unbeaten run in the derby to six matches across all competitions at the time.
The rivalry continued into 2026, when AC Milan defeated Inter 1-0 again on 8 March. The victory meant Milan had won both Serie A derbies in the same season for the first time since 2010/11 and extended their unbeaten run against Inter to seven matches in all competitions.
Why AC Milan v Inter Is So Special
The history of AC Milan v Inter is ultimately about much more than league positions or three points. It is a rivalry shaped by geography, tradition, European glory, legendary players and generations of supporters. The two clubs share the San Siro, yet on derby day it feels as though the stadium belongs to two completely different worlds.
That is the beauty of the Derby della Madonnina. Form can go out of the window, reputations can disappear and footballing logic can take the afternoon off. Whether it is a Serie A title race, a Champions League knockout tie or simply bragging rights in Milan, AC Milan v Inter has consistently delivered drama. And with more than a century of history behind it, there is every reason to expect plenty more chapters to come.
