Internazionale

Internazionale are the only side in Italy to have played in each and every season of Serie A, which started in 1929-30, which has allowed them to build up a huge fan base and as you would expect, they have won all that there is to win in Italian football.

Inter Milan have also enjoyed success on the European stage with Champions League and Uefa cup trophies to their name. The huge trophy cabinet of Internazionale also includes Intercontinental Cups and even a FIFA Club World Cup trophy.

As iconic as Inter Milan are, their home stadium of the San Siro, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is just as famous.

It is no surprise that the biggest rivals of Inter Milan are their city and stadium neighbours AC Milan with matches between the 2 called Derby della Madonnina.

Football Club Internazionale Milano, more commonly known to football fans in Britain as Inter Milan, are one of the biggest football clubs not only in Italy but also in Europe, so it is no surprise that they have enjoyed success throughout their history.

The club have won multiple Serie A titles, numerous Coppa Italia trophies and also they have enjoy a number of wins in the Supercoppa Italia.

On the continental front, the club have won numerous Champions Leagues / European Cup wins and they have also won the UEFA Cup / Europa League.

As one of the giants of the world game, the club have also enjoyed success on the world stage with wins in the Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Inter, based in the city of Milan in the Lombardy region of Italy were born out of schism with what is now AC Milan back in 1908 so it is no surprise that the clubs biggest rivalry is against the club they share they San Siro home ground with.

Matches between the 2 Milanese giants are known locally as the Derby della Madonnina, or simply as the Milan Derby for fans across Britain.

Whilst the club have regularly topped the average attendance table in Italy but with a capacity of over 80,000, matches at their home ground can have large areas of empty spaces and that can lead to a poor atmosphere.

When it comes to derby day that goes out of the window, with the Milan Derby been famed across the footballing world for having one of the loudest and fiercest atmospheres in the game and that is part of what makes that match so special.

Whilst known as the San Siro to fans in Britain, the home ground of both Internazionale and AC Milan is officially known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, named after a famous player, to play for both AC Milan and Inter Milan. It is found in the San Siro district of Milan and is famed for the ringed tower that are spaced around the outside of the ground that act as walkways for fans to get to the numerous tiers.

As you would also expect from such a big club, there have been many stars of the Italian and international game to play for the club including Adriano, Giuseppe Baresi, Emre Belozoglu, Giuseppe Bergomi, Nicola Berti, Esteban Cambiasso, Benoit Cauet, Cristian Chivu, Ivan Cordoba, Hernan Crespo, Julio Cruz, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Luigi Di Biagio, Youri Djorkaeff, Samual Eto’o, Luis Figo, Javier Zanetti, Giacinto Facchetti, Mario Cosrso, Walter Zenga and Julio Cesar.

With such iconic names on the field, a great stadium off of it and huge success for most of their existence it is no surprise that Inter have one of the largest fanbases in Italian football and that has led to be given a number of nicknames including I Nerazzurri (The Black and Blues) due to their iconic playing strip, La Beneamata (The Cherished One) and Il Briscione (The Big Grass Snake).

History of Inter Milan

Inter Milan are now one of the worlds biggest clubs with one of the highest average attendances in Italian football but just as is the case with ever giant of the worlds famous sport, the history of Internazionale is long and storied one that started from humble beginnings.

The club were formed in March 1908 as Football Club Internazionale after a schism at the Milan Cricket and Football Club, who are now the clubs biggest rivals AC Milan.

In case you are wondering where the name of the club comes from, it was the wish of its founders to accept players from across the world and not just restrict themselves to Italian payers, as was the style at the time.

It didn’t take long for the club to enjoy success as they won their first league championship in 1910, with its second coming 10 years later in 1920 but by 1922, the club were almost relegated to the 2nd tier but survived by winning a play-off.

The club almost disappeared during the fascist era of Italy when they were forced to merge with Unione Sportiva Milanese and were renamed Societa Sportiva Ambrosiana.

In 1929, the club name changed once again to Associazione Sportiva Ambrosiana and retuned the clubs playing colours of black and blue shirts after the merged club had started playing in white shirts with a red cross on it.

Despite the name changes and branding changes, fans of the club still referred to the club as Inter and that was then added to the official name of the club.

The club first Coppa Italia came about in the 1938-39 season when they were led by Giuseppe Meazza, who the San Siro is now named after.

Another league title was won in 1940 before a stop in play for the war. At the end of WW2, the club returned to their original name and returned to winning ways by picking up the league title in both 1953 and 1954.

The 1960’s was one of the clubs main ‘Golden eras’, helped by new manager Helenio Herrara joined them from Barcelona and brought Luis Suarez, the reigning European Footballer of the Year with him.

During this period, Inter started to utilise a 5-3-2 attacking set up including the use of a sweeper player for the first time as well as utilising attacking fullbacks, or wing backs.

In 1964, Inter reached the final of the European Cup, where they picked up the title by defeating the giants of Real Madrid before going on to defeat Independiente of Argentina to win the Intercontinental Cup and become not just the champions of Europe but the champions of the world.

A year later, the club would match that feat by defeating Benfica of Portugal in the European Cup final and Independiente once again in the Intercontinental Cup but in 1967 the newly renamed Football Club Internazionale Milano lost the European Cup final to Glasgow Celtic.

After that golden era, things started to slow down although the club did pick up Scudetto’s in 1971, 1980 and 1989, whilst they also enjoyed a couple of wins in the Italian Cup.

The 1990’s was a tough one for the Milan giants ,especially as their rivals AC Milan and Juventus started to become the dominant forces in Italian football.

In the 1993-94 season, the club avoided relegation by just a single point although they did managed to continue to enjoy success on the continental case with UEFA Cup wins in 1991, 94 and 98.

By the mid 1990’s and following the takeover of the club by Massimo Moratti, the black and blue half of the city broke the world transfer record on 2 occasions when they signed Ronaldo from Barcelona and Christian Vieri from Lazio but despite all of that big money been spent, the club went the whole of the decade without picking up a league title.

The early 2000’s continued to see the club under-perform but they bounced back when they won the 2005-06 championship in Italy after it was stripped from Juventus as part of the big match fixing scandal that rocked the sport.

Inter took advantage of many of their rivals been docked points, suffering fines, or even losing their place in the top flight and that is just what they did in the 2009-10 season when they became the first Italian side to win the league title, the Champion League and the Coppa Italia in the same season.

Since then the club have undergone many changes off of the field and on it and whilst they did return briefly to the top of the tree in Italy under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, the club’s finances saw him leave quickly and some of their big names leave.

They would finish 2nd in the 2019-20 Serie A camepaign and they reached the 2020 UEFA Europa League Final where they lost to Sevilla in an entertaining game.

Success didn’t take too long to come back to the club however as they would end Juventus’ run of nine straight league titles when they won the 2020-21 Scudetto but it was soon after that win when Conte left the club.

One interesting titbit to do with the club over the past few season has been the transfer of Romano Lukaku who, after excelling in the slower paced Serie A, was sold to Chelsea for E115m but after struggling in the Premier League, he was loaned back just a season later.
