AC Milan vs SSC Napoli
The northern giants of AC Milan welcome the southern giants of Napoli for a north vs south battle in Italy that is always a must watch game.

The Rossoneri have had many of the biggest names to have every taken to a football field where their iconic red and black stripes and whilst it has been some time since the likes of Marco van Baten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard walked out onto the San Siro pitch, they are still packed with numerous international stars.
The same can be said about their opponents in this one who have had icons of the sport such as Diego Maradana where their colours and whist they don’t quite have that calibre of star in this day and age, they too have plenty of internationals and household names who will take part in this one.

Stadium
The match takes place at the iconic San Siro Stadium that is one of the biggest stadiums, not just in Italy but in world football and whilst it is fair to say that the stadium has seen better days, it remains one of the most impressive stadiums for football to take place in.
Based in the city of Milano, the stadium, that is also known as the Guiseppe Meazza, is capable of hosting around 75,000 fans when full, as it likely will be for a match of this magnitude.
The stands at the ground are steep and its layout makes it easy to recognise no matter who is playing their, with 1 upper tier missing and the large walkway in front of the main camera location but where the ground often stands out, is in the atmosphere that it helps the Milan fans create.
That all comes together to create the perfect setting for the stars of both teams to play at their very best and to entertain us all for 90 minutes.
The stadium is always one of the easiest to recognise in European football circles thanks to its design that features huge spiral walkways in each corner of the stadium.
Inside, the stadium is just as easy to recognise at the huge banked stands are seemingly missing one side as it is far lower than the other three sides but even those watching at home will be able to spot the stadium with ease thanks to the walkway that goes in front of the main camera.

Where You Can Watch
If you have been a fan of these clubs, or of Italian football, for a long time, you will know just how tricky it can be to watch domestic Italian football live on British television.
Even for those who are in the fortunate position to have a subscription to an expensive pay tv sports channel that have the rights to Italian football, it can be difficult to watch a match such as this one.
That is because only a select number of matches are chosen to be broadcast and that can often mean that a matchup such as this one gets overlooked.
Thankfully, there is now a straightforward way to choose the matches that you want to watch live, including matches between Inter and Napoli and that is by using one of the incredible live streaming services found on this very page.
Each service offers something different, so all that you need to do is choose the one that works the best for you to be able to watch the next time that these two take the field in either the cup or the league.

History
Few fixtures in Italian football carry quite the same combination of history, drama and star power as AC Milan v Napoli. When the Rossoneri and Partenopei meet, it is rarely just another Serie A match. This is a fixture shaped by title races, legendary players, tactical battles and enough footballing drama to keep Italian coffee makers working overtime.
The history of AC Milan v Napoli stretches back decades, with the first competitive meeting taking place in 1927. Across their long rivalry, the two clubs have produced a remarkably balanced contest. Historical records show Milan and Napoli have faced each other more than 180 times in official competitions, with Milan holding a narrow overall advantage in victories.
The Maradona Era and the Birth of a Rivalry
While AC Milan v Napoli had already been played for many years, the fixture took on a completely different meaning during the 1980s. The arrival of Diego Maradona at Napoli in 1984 transformed the club into one of the most formidable sides in Europe, while Milan were beginning their own remarkable rise under a new generation of players and, later, manager Arrigo Sacchi.
The first Milan-Napoli meeting involving Maradona came at San Siro on 3 March 1985. Milan won 2-1, despite Maradona scoring from the penalty spot, but it was only the beginning of a series of unforgettable encounters between the Argentine superstar and the Rossoneri.
During this period, the rivalry became a battle between two very different footballing identities. Napoli had Maradona, Careca and a team capable of producing individual brilliance, while Milan developed the formidable Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. In other words, Serie A had somehow managed to put several footballing cheat codes on the same pitch.
The Famous 1988 Scudetto Showdown
One of the most famous AC Milan v Napoli matches came on 1 May 1988. Napoli were the reigning champions and were fighting to retain their Serie A title, while Milan were chasing them in the table. Only one point separated the teams, making the meeting in Naples a genuine Scudetto showdown.
Milan eventually won 3-2 in a thrilling match. Pietro Paolo Virdis scored twice, Marco van Basten added another, while Maradona scored from a free-kick and Careca pulled another goal back for Napoli. Milan held on and subsequently secured the title, while the victory became a defining moment in the development of Sacchi’s great Milan side.
The following season, Napoli responded emphatically by beating Milan 4-1 in November 1988. It was another reminder that this fixture was capable of swinging spectacularly from one extreme to the other.
Van Basten, Maradona and More Memorable Meetings
The rivalry continued into the early 1990s, producing several eye-catching results. Milan recorded big victories including a 5-0 win over Napoli in January 1992 and a 5-1 victory in Naples later that year. The latter was particularly memorable for Marco van Basten, who scored four goals in one of the great individual performances in the fixture’s history.
Maradona’s personal record against Milan was also impressive. He played 13 matches against the Rossoneri, winning five, drawing three and losing five, while scoring six goals. So even against one of the strongest Milan teams in history, Napoli’s number 10 certainly did not arrive merely to admire the San Siro grass.
Modern Champions League Drama
AC Milan v Napoli eventually became more than a Serie A story. The clubs met in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, creating another historic chapter in their rivalry. Milan won the first leg 1-0 at San Siro before a 1-1 draw in Naples secured their place in the semi-finals.
Those matches demonstrated how the rivalry had evolved. The 1980s had been defined by Maradona, Gullit and Van Basten, whereas the Champions League meetings featured a new generation competing on Europe’s biggest stage.
Why AC Milan v Napoli Remains Special
The history of AC Milan v Napoli is ultimately about more than statistics. It represents two hugely important Italian football cities, two famous clubs and generations of players who have repeatedly produced meaningful matches.
From Maradona’s brilliance and Sacchi’s tactical revolution to Van Basten’s goals and modern Champions League battles, the fixture has consistently delivered moments worth remembering. Whether the prize is three Serie A points, a Scudetto or European glory, AC Milan v Napoli has a habit of making an ordinary football weekend feel rather less ordinary.
