Popular Matches

If many footballing fans of a certain vintage were asked to name an Italian club side the majority would instantly name the likes of Juventus, the Milanese rivals and maybe even Roma or Lazio but one other name that maybe mentioned first would be Napoli and that is all down to one man.

Formed in 1926, the club didn’t enjoy too much success early on in its existence with just one Coppa Italia success until 1965 when the club reformed after financial issues.

Things simply ticked along from there once more but then in the 1980’s everything changed at the club, or at least for a decade or so as they made the signing of global superstar Diego Maradona.

During the mercurial Argentines stay in Naples, he and Napoli won numerous trophies and there first Serie A league titles in 1987 and 1990 but it was only a fleeting period of success as the club once again well on hard times financially and Maradona, along with many of his teammates left the club for pastures new.

That led to a number of relegations and for Napoli to become almost the forgotten team of Italian football and a for a whole generation or in anocal fans to support other teams and for international fans to simply forget about them.

Thankfully for their fans if you were to ask football fans of today to name an Italian club side, there name will once again be up there with the likes of Juventus thanks to a number of years back at the top of the Italian game and playing in European competitions.

That was down to film producer Aurelio de Laurentils whose investment saw the club return backing to winning ways including getting into the Champions League and picking up more Coppa Italia trophies.

The club’s home ground is instantly recognisable as it is a large bowl on top of a smaller one, where no fans are placed.

It is fair to say that the ground has seen better days and that the club are is drastic need of a new or heavily remodelled home ground but on its day the Stadio San Paolo can give a great atmosphere.

One of those days tends to be when Roma are in town as the club have a long standing rivalry with the team from the capital.

Matches between the 2 sides are given the moniker of Derby del Sole (Derby of the Sun). In more recent times the club have also established a rivalry with Juventus as not only have the 2 clubs been battling it out over titles and trophies over the last few years but also for players.

The good news for fans of Napoli and for football fans in general is that you can watch Napoli live online no matter if they are playing big matches against the likes of Juventus and Roma or in the cup against a 3rd tier team, you can watch all of the action live online via our Napoli live stream partners.

The club play in a predominantly blue shirt with white shorts so it is no surprise that they have the nickname of Gli Azzurri (The Blues).

Down the years Napoli have been able to attract some huge stars to the club including the aforementioned Diego Maradona (signed for a world record transfer fee from FC Barcelona), the legendary Dino Zoff, Jose Altafini, Omar Sivori, Ciro Ferra, Salvatore Bagni, Marek Hamsik, Dries Mertens, Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuaín and Hirving Lozano.

The biggest problem for Napoli has been able to keep their stars and to stop going from one team break up to another due to financial mismanagement.

History

The origin of the club can be traced back to 1905 when the first ever Neapolitan club was founded as Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club by an English sailor, with a number of local business men also getting involved.

That clubs original kit was a sky blue and navy blue striped shirt, which they wore in their first match against a group of English sailors onboard the boat Arabik.

In those early years, only teams from the north of the country were allowed to play in the Italian Football Championship aside from the Lipton Challenge Cup, which the club won on 3 occasions.

As happened with the likes of AC Milan, the club underwent a major split during the 1910’s, as part of the club wanted to allow non-Italians to play for them whilst some wanted only Italians.

That led to a new club called Internazionale Napoli forming in 1912 but with both clubs struggling for finances, they would merge back together in 1922 to form Foot-Ball Club Internazionale-Naples, commonly abbreviated to FBC Internaples.

That lasted until 1926, when the club changed their name once again to Associazione Calcio Napoli and they were re-admitted to the Divisione Nazionale (the forerunner of the Serie A).

Although they started well to their new life in the top tier, they soon started to struggle and after the formation of the new league set up, they were relegated to Serie B in 1942.

They returned to the top flight soon after the war but were relegated once again after a bribery scandal.

It took until the early 1950’s for them to return to the top flight and in by the end of that decade, the club had moved to the Stadio San Paolo home ground that has remained their home ever since.

They wouldn’t see immediate success upon moving however as the early 60’s saw the club become a yo-yo club with relegations and promotions.

They did defeat SPAL to win the Coppa Italia in 1962 and after a promotion in 1965, the club would establish themselves as a club capable of pushing for top 5 finishes in Serie A, including a second place finish in the 1967-68 season.

Some of the stars to play for the club during that era include the likes of Dino Zoff, Jose Altafini, Antonio Juliano and Omar Sivori.

That would give them the basis for good performances into the 1970’s when they would start to compete in European competitions including the Anglo-Italian League Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

It was the 1980’s when the club really started to make a mark on the world stage however when they broke the word transfer record to sign Diego Maradona from Barcelona in 1984, which unsurprisingly led to their best ever season in the 1986-87 season when they not only won the Serie A title but they complete the double by winning the Coppa Italia.

That was not only the clubs first league title but they became the first southern based team to become the champions of Italy.

It also saw them enter the European Cup for the first time but they would struggle and finish second in Serie A.

That did lead to them entering the UEFA Cup and after defeating Stuttgart in the final ,the club won there first ever European trophy.

They then won their second ever title in the 1989-90 season but the good times were not to last as Maradona would receive a 15 month ban for failing a drug test, to the surprise of no one, and he would never play for the club again.

That led to a long decline for the club heading into the new millennium and in 2004 the club were declared bankrupt and had to start life in Serie C1, with the new name Napoli Soccer.

There fans stood by them and they smashed all attendance records for the 3rd tier but it took 2 seasons to gain promotion to Serie B and restored their former name.

It took just one season to gain promotion to the top flight once again and they would soon find themselves back in European competitions starting with a place in the 2010-11 UEFA Europe League.

The club would finished 3rd in Serie A the next season to return to the Champions League once again.

In the 2011-12 season, they would defeat Juve to pick up the Coppa Italia to win their first cup trophy for 25 years.

They would achieve the same thing by once again defeating Juventus in the Coppa Italia final in the 2019-20 season and after Maradona passed away, they renamed their home stadium in his honour.
