No matter if you are a supporter of these 2 giants of the European or not, you will know the importance of El Clasico matches as the rivalry simply goes past football and these matches take on an importance to the clubs, the fans, the off field staff and the cities the club represent away from the field.
Real Madrid represent Madrid, Spain and in many ways the Spanish establishment (they are called Real after all which translates to Royal and means they have the royal seal of approval) whilst Barcelona represent the culture and history of the Catalan region they are based in.
With the tensions so high between those 2 factions politically, the match has taken on a whole new level of importance over the past decade but even without all of that happening away from what the clubs can control, on the field and in the stands, this is also a massive rivalry.
Both of these 2 sides feature star studded line ups, full of internationals superstars and they are the 2 teams who have historically battled it out over trophies and titles in Spain.
The 2 have also become huge rivals in European action and the players themselves have also becomes rivals- who can forget the decade of Messi v Ronaldo?
For both sets of fans, this is the one game that matters as a win over their rival in El Clasico can really make or break a season.
On the flip side of that, a loss piles the pressure on the losing side, no matter how well they are doing and for Real Madrid to lose this match at home, it is almost unthinkable and it will always make the players and coaching staff worry for their positions at the club.
Stadium
On derby day, the Bernabeu is up there amongst the best atmospheres in world sport and with 85,000+ fans baying for the blood of Barca from minute 1 to minute 90 but also waiting to turn on their side in they struggle and fall behind, the winner of the game is often the team that can handle of the pressure of the occasion and from playing in El Clasico at the Bernabeu.

Rivalry
There are some rivalries that are built on the locations of the clubs, there are some rivalries built on the fact that the teams are the top clubs in a competition and there are some rivalries that are built on social and political reasons away from the on field issues and then there is the rivalry between the Royalty backed Real Madrid and the Catalans of FC Barcelona which not only features all of the above but so much more besides.
Starting off as a heated battle between 2 of biggest clubs in domestic Spanish football, the matches between the 2 icons of the sport has developed into so much more than that as 2 have constantly battle in everything from European action to domestic cups and of course it is also the match that has given its nickname, El Clasico to matches across the globe from South America to North America and from Europe to Oceania.
On the field, these 2 clubs have constantly featured star names from across the globe and they have constantly been amongst the teams battling it out for titles and trophies in Spain and that has made the majority of matches between the 2 sides hugely important not just for the bragging rights but also in terms of league points and for advancing in competitions.
Off of the field, the rivalry is built on the fact that in many ways Real Madrid are a sporting representative of Spanish Nationalism and on the Monarchy of the country, whilst FC Barcelona have been a highly active and focal point for the building momentum of Catalan nationalism.
That adds to the spectacle every time that these 2 clubs meet and all of that comes together to make for a simply must watch football match no matter if you are a fan of Spanish football or not.

History
If you are a fan of either of these 2 giants of the Spanish game, or just a fan of Spanish football in general you will know just how huge the matches are between the 2 sides.
Such is the importance of both of these 2 sides and the worldwide fanbases that they have, even the most causal of football fan with little to no interest in La Liga know of these 2 sides and the rivalry that they have and much of that is down, in part, to the long history of the 2 sides and the history of the matches between themselves, including those games played at the ionic Santiago Bernabeu.
The first ever match between the 2 sides to be hosted in the league by Real Madrid came all of the way back in May 1929 when Madrid lost to Barcelona by a single goal to nil, that did however come on the back of Madrid defeating Barca in the first game at the Camp Nou.
Madrid did make up for that loss however by winning the 2nd game to be hosted at the Santiago Bernabeu as they thrashed Barca by 5 goals to 1 in a game that saw Jaime Lazcano Escola become the first player to score a hat-trick in an El Clasico.
Matches between the 2 sides are known for the great goals that have featured in them, for the incredible talent found in both squads and for the sheer excitement and intensity of every match up but it did not take long for the first ever 0-0 draw to be played out between the 2 sides.
That result first occurred on the 1st of February 1930 at the Bernabeu but thankfully the next score to standout in a game between the 2 sides played in the Spanish capital city came on the 3rd of February 1935 when Real defeated there heated rivals by 8 goals to 2.
That result saw Lazcano score another hat-trick to become the first player to score more than 1 hat-tricks in El Clasico history but he was outshone on the day by Ildefonso Fernando Sanuada Garcia who become the first ever player in the history of these matches to score 4 goals in one game.
Down the years, these matches have really developed a reputation for high scoring and close affairs and whilst they do not always live up to expectation, there are plenty of examples from down the years including a match played in Madrid on the 19th of October 1941 in the league when Real ran out winners of FC Barca by 4 goals to 3.
The 1950’s saw Madrid conquer all in front of them in continental action and they also dominated matches in domestic action including home matches against FCB which was highlighted by their 5-0 win in 1953 in a match that saw Alfredo Stefan Di Stefano Laulhe, one of the first true global stars of the sport, score his first ever Clasico goal.
Between the 18th of September 1949 to the 8th of November 1964, Madrid enjoyed a 17 match winning run against Barca in home league matches.
In 2009, one of the most memorable matches between the 2 sides took place at the Bernabeu when Real lost by 2 goals to 6 which came hot on the heels of a 2005 match up where the hosts lost 0-3 in a game dominated by the mercurial Ronaldinho, when the usually hostile home crowd actually gave Barca’s Brazilian star a standing ovation and chanted his name.
After a run stretching back to October 2014, Real finally defeated Barca at home, when they defeated their arch-rivals by 2 goals to 0.
That started a 4 match overall winning run which came to a crashing end in the 2022, when they lost 4-0 at home.
