Dutch Eredivisie

The Eredivisie, which translates as the Honour Division or the Premier Division, is the top of the footballing pyramid in The Netherlands and acts as the main qualification process for European football, including the Europa League and Champions League and the competition also has promotion and relegation to the 2nd tier of football, which creates a fluid league that is amongst the most entertaining in European football.

It is from those aforementioned European competitions that many of the competitions teams have really made there names for football fans in general and for those who don’t follow domestic Dutch football.

The likes of PSV Eindhoven, Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam have all enjoyed years and years of success in European football and it is no surprise that it is the big city teams in Holland who have been dominated.

Just like in most sporting leagues, the teams from big cities have the biggest fanbases, more sponsors and thee fore more finances to have the best players and the best facilities and that is defiantly the case in The Netherlands.

There is quite a difference however in Dutch football as whilst the top teams do have more of everything compare to the majority of other teams in the competition, they fall far behind many other teams in Europe and that means that they must build their teams in a different way.

That has led to a big focus for most teams in the Eredivisie to focus on their youth teams and to build there own stars instead of buying them and to also scour the world of football for the best up and coming talent from across the globe.

That leads to break out stars consistently coming through into the first teams squads of Dutch teams with many going on to be stars on the world club and international game.

The Big 3, as the iconic trio of Dutch football are known of have played every single season of the Eredivisie, with none on them been relegated and they have also won the vast majority of league titles with the capital city based Ajax leading the way.

The Eredivisie has developed a reputation for been an attack minded league where teams simply try to outscore the other and that leads to many entertaining games and it often leads to the top scorer of the Eredivisie been the European golden boot winner.

If you are a football purist, the Dutch Eredivisie league may not be the right choice for you but if you are a football fan who loves goals, action and entertainment then the Eredivisie is a great choice and a competition well worth watching.

Unfortunately, the relative low interest in the competition makes it difficult to watch live on British TV, especially games that aren’t between the big 3 of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV but thanks to the internet, you can watch all of the great action from the Dutch topflight live online via our Eredivisie live stream partners.

Eredivisie History

The Netherlands is one of the world’s most passionate and successful football playing countries, so it will be no surprise that countries top flight has produced many of the biggest stars to have played the game and a number of biggest clubs to feature in the sport.

Translated as the ‘Honour Division’, much of the success in the Dutch top flight has gone to 3 clubs, with Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord sharing the honours between them with only a handful of titles going to other clubs.

In fact, it has been Ajax of Amsterdam who have won almost half of all titles to have been competed for in the Dutch top flight since the competition came into existence in 1956.

Football in the country does of course have a much longer history but between 1898 and 1954, the national champions was decided by a series of play-off matches between the clubs to have their own regional competitions.

Back then, the competitions were purely amateur and whilst players did find ways around that and clubs managed to find ways to pay players, the calls for a new professional league set up to be put in place as many stars of the Dutch game found themselves having to leave the country to make a living in the sport.

After the North Sea Flood of 1953, a match was set up between Dutch players playing abroad to play the French national side, a match that the KNVB (the Dutch FA) boycotted, but after a win for the Dutch team, the quality of a potential national team featuring professional players who were banned from representing the country at that time was shown and calls from across The Netherlands were growing for the establishment of what was to become the Eredivisie.

Originally, professional football was first established in the country by a breakaway competition administrated by the NBVB for the 1954-55 season but this led to the owners of the amateur clubs under the control of the KNVB to worry and fear that their players would all leave to play professionally and it was finally the pressure form them that forced the KNVB to turn semi-professional.

This therefore led to 2 professional competitions running alongside each other in the country but that didn’t last for long and thankfully common sense prevailed and the leagues decided to merge and combine there resources to create a brand new, professional national top flight in The Netherlands.

Some clubs where accepted into the new competition as they were, some were forced to merge and after a short time the establishment of the Eredivisie came about.

For that initial 1956 season, the inaugural clubs to participate in the league were Ajax, BVC, BVV, DOS, EVV, Elinkwijk, SC Enschede, Feijenoord, Fortuna 54, GVAV, MVV, NAC, Noad, PSV, Rapid J.C., Sparta, VVV 03 and Willem II.

In a sign of things to come, it was the giants of Ajax from the nation’s capital city of Amsterdam who went on to become the first ever Eredivisie champions.

Since then Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV from 3 of the biggest cities in the country and therefore having access to big fanbases and lots of companies for sponsorship reasons have gone onto dominate but a number of other clubs have gone on to enjoy titles on more than one occasion including the likes of Den Haag, Sparta Rotterdam, RAP, Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II, AZ, Heracles Almelo and Den Haag.

As is so often the case in top tier football leagues, the Eredivisie has seen a number of club enjoying dominant winning runs or decades of success.

The first club to win the title on more than one occasion was Ajax (1956-57 and 1959-60), whilst the first club to defend there title was Feyenoord (1960-61 and 1961-62.

The first club to really start dominating things were the 1960’s Ajax team that won 3 straight titles between 1965-66 to 1967-68, becoming the first club to achieve that feat.

The next win streak record was achieve by PSV Eindhoven who starting in the 1985-86 season, won an incredible 4 straight titles and 6 from 7, with only Ajax breaking that run in the 1989-90 season.

PSV would match that 4 straight titles record between 2004-05 to 2007-08 and it would be matched soon after with Ajax winning 4 back to back titles between 2010-11 to 2013-14
