The league has been in existence ever since the 1898 season which does make it one of the most historic competitions in the world although it has undergone a number of changes since then.
From its inception to the 1929 season, the league was known simply as Serie A but the first name change came in for the 1930-31 season when it actually received 3 names for each of the languages spoken in the country.
In German it was known as 1. Liga, in French it was known as 1e Ligue and in Italian it was known as Prima Lega.
This then changed to Nationalliga (German), Ligue Nationale (French) and Lega Nazionale (Italian) between 1931-44.
It then changed again between 1944-2003 to Nationalliga A (German), Ligue Nationale A (French) and Lega Nazionale A (Italian) before the new name of simply the Super League was used across the board.
Despite been a relatively small nation, many of the clubs have huge fanbases and have relatively large and imposing stadiums that are capable of creating great atmospheres, especially for the big matches features the top teams of FC Basel, FC Zurich, and Young Boys.
The biggest stadiums are St Jakob-Park (home to FC Basel), Stade de Geneve (home to Servette FC) and Stade de Suisse (home to BSC Young Boys in Bern).

Format Change
In April 2022, it was proposed by the SFL to increase the league to 12 clubs and a new set up to the season format would be implemented.
The new changes brought in a new 3 stage set up to the season in Switzerland with an initial round robin format to act as a qualifying stage.
This would see all 12 teams compete before joining a intermediary group stage set up, with the 1st to 6th placed teams from the round robin joining the Championship league and the teams finishing in 7-12th playing in a qualification group.
The final stage will be a play-off competition for deciding the league champions and other final positions including who will play in European competitions.
