Australian A League

Australian A League Live Streaming
Ever since the A League replaced the National Soccer League in Australia and New Zealand the competition has gone from strength to strength and can now attract world famous names to its top teams.

With Rugby League being the dominate football code in Australia the competition has developed around towns and cities that have Rugby League teams as most clubs share their stadiums with NRL tams.

This has probably been a help to the A League as Rugby League is in every main Australian city (bar Perth) which has led to football teams been developed in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The current format of the league also takes inspiration from Rugby League which makes it a much easier sell for Australian and New Zealand fans with all teams competing in a regular season before the top teams taking part in an end of season play off, with a grand final determining the winner of the A League.

The winners of the A League and teams to have successful season gain qualification not continental action in the Asian competitions.

The top continental side for A League teams is the Asian Football Confederation Champions League, also known as the AFC Champions League or simply as the ACL, which is similar to the Champions League in Europe as it pits the top teams from across the continent to decide upon the champions of Asia.

With no promotion and relegation in the A League, all of the teams battle it out for a Minor Premiership, winning the league and for a place in the Grand Final to make sure they qualify for Champions League football although as a New Zealand based team, the Wellington Phoenix cannot qualify for the ACL.

Amongst the current teams to ply there trade in the Australian A League are Adelaide United (Adelaide), Brisbane Roar (Brisbane), Central Coast Mariners (Gosford, NSW), Melbourne City (Melbourne), Melbourne Victory (Melbourne), Newcastle Jets (Newcastle, NSW), Perth Glory (Perth), Sydney FC (Sydney), Wellington Phoenix (Wellington, New Zealand), Western Sydney Wanderers (Sydney), Western United (Victoria) and Macarthur FC (NSW).

The great news for fans of any of these teams or for any Australians based over here in the UK is that you can watch all of the action live online via our A League live stream partners.

With so many of the teams from the A League been based in around the major cities, it is no surprise that there are a number of rivalry that have already developed despite the relatively young nature of the competition and of the majority of the teams.

One derby match that is all down to location is the Melbourne Derby between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory. The derby has one of the loudest atmospheres in the competition and attracts some of the biggest attendances.

The Original Derby is the name given to matches between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory and whilst the teams come from different states, South Australia and Victoria respectively, the teams are 2 of the oldest in the competition and both think of themselves of founders of the sport.

The Sydney Derby, between Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers is another derby based on location and has given some of the biggest attendance sin the league since its inception in 2016 when the Wanderers joined the competition.

There has always been a big rivalry between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne and that has continued in Australian Soccer with matches between the Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC given the moniker of the Big Blue.

The final big rivalry in the competition is between the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets, which is the given the title of the F3 Derby after the road that links the two towns in New South Wales.
