The Virsliga, or Higher League, is as the name perhaps hints at, the top flight football competition in Latvia and features the top clubs in the country all vying to finish top of the table come season end and to then of course be name the champions of Latvia.

The league also acts as the main qualification process for Latvian clubs to qualify for European competitions and whilst it is a competition that often goes overlooked here in Britain, it is a league full of excitement and lots of action worth watching, which you can now do live online.

The Latvian top flight has a long and storied history going back to 1927, when the league was first established by bringing together the Riga Football League and a number of other league held regional throughout the country.

After the soviet occupation of the country, the championship of Soviet Latvia was the main competition in the country that pretty much took off from where the old league left off and it was not until 1992 when the current Virslig was established and has continued to offer great footballing action.

As one of the smallest nations in Europe, it is perhaps no surprise that the league is also one of the smallest in a UEFA aligned competition, with either 8,9 or 0 teams playing in the top flight throughout its history.

This leads to clubs having to play against each other a number of times to make enough games to compete a full season, with many clubs playing each other 4 times a season.

As is the case in the majority of sporting competitions around the world, it is the teams based in the biggest cities that have enjoyed the most success in Latvia with those teams based in the countries capital of Riga been the best supported and the most successful.

With the top flight featuring promotion from and relegation to the Latvijas 1. Liga (the 2nd tier competition in Latvia), the top flight always features the best of the best when it comes to domestic football in the country.

Although there have been lots of teams to win the league down the years, a lot of the former champions have come and gone and have either dissolved or have dropped down the league to semi-pro or even amateur levels.

The cubs to have enjoyed the most success since the restoration of the Latvian league system in 1991 have been Skonto Riga (who won the first 14 titles in Latvia before going bankrupt in 2016), FK Ventspils and Riga FC.

As a side note, one of the leading coaches in the country over the last couple of decades or so has been Paul Ashworth, an Englishman probably more famous in Latvia than he is in his homeland after turning a failed footballing career into a solid coaching one.
