Sport is a big part of the culture of NZ which has helped it to become a major nation in a number of sports despite having a relatively small population.
In many countries it is the sport of Football that dominates and that is often to the downfall of other sports but with no such challenge in New Zealand, it has helped a wide variety of sports to develop and for the country to excel.
Rugby Union
When it comes to national sporting teams there are no more dominant and iconic than the New Zealand national Rugby Union side, known as the All Blacks although they have traditionally been more a Pacific representative side with players from numerous other countries such as Tonga, Samoa and Fiji.
Despite where the players may actually come from, the All Blacks do represent New Zealand and they have won all that there is to win in the sport and have managed to stay at the top of the international Rugby Union scene for many decades.
Rugby League
The country also has a leading side that have one it all in Rugby League were the majority of players are from the country of New Zealand itself due to the spread of the sport throughout the Pacific.
Known around the world as ‘The Kiwis’, the New Zealand Rugby League national side have a long standing rivalry with the Australian Kangaroos which is only boosted by them battling it in major finals on a relatively ongoing basis and with the biggest New Zealand based club sides playing in the Australian NRL competition- the world’s biggest domestic club competition in either code.
Cricket
With Rugby played in winter in the country, the summer sporting scene is dominated by Cricket and although the domestic scene has little interest from locals, the international game is widely supported especially when nations such as England and Australia are in town.
Basketball
The sport of Basketball has seen a rise in interest thanks to the establishment of a professional franchise based in the city of Auckland who ply their trade in the Australian competition, although they have had little success on the international stage.
Netball
Netball remains the most popular sport for female participants in the country and it is the only sport in the country where the women’s game is the most popular over the men’s.
Football
Unlike most countries, especially those with strong links to the UK, the sport of Football (Soccer) only has a small following in New Zealand, with most fans been those with European heritages but there is a professional team in the country who once again play in the Australian competition.
Football is of course the only truly global sport in the world and on the global stage New Zealand have continually struggled but in regional competition they have often been the powerhouse nation, especially since Australia joined the Asian confederation.
Horse Racing
Horse Racing has a small but popular calendar of meetings in the country including number of big events such as the Auckland Cup and the Wellington Cup festival.
Hockey
As is so often the case in Commonwealth countries, the sport of Field Hockey (known simply as Hockey in the country) is popular and the ‘Black Sticks’ have enjoyed lots of success in both the men’s and women’s game.
Individual Sports
There are a number of individual sports that have seen success for participants form New Zealand including global sports such as Golf and Tennis as well as sports such as Motorsport.
Other Sports
Other sports to have some level of popularity in the country includes Athletics, Kickboxing, Boxing, Ki-o-rahi, Rowing, Sailing, Surfing, Winter Sports, Softball, Squash, Triathlon and Volleyball.
