It was a relatively slow start to the pro tour however for Selby but since then he has gone on to become one of the successful players in the history of the sport including multiple runs as the world number 1, picking up the Triple Crown by winning the UK Championship, Masters and World Championship) but where he has really excelled is on the biggest stage of them all.

History

History of Mark Selby Snooker

Mark Anthony Selby was born in Leicester, England, on 19 June 1983. He developed his game during his youth and won the English Under-15 Championship in 1998. He turned professional in 1999, aged 16, beginning a career that would eventually make him one of the defining players of his generation. His progress was not instant: like many young professionals, he had to build experience against established opponents and learn how to translate his talent into consistent results on the main tour.

One of Selby’s first major indications of his potential came at the 2002 China Open. Still a teenager, he defeated Joe Swail, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan on his way to the semi-finals. Those were significant names to overcome, and the run showed that he could compete with experienced players on a major stage. In 2003, he reached the final of the Scottish Open, where he lost to David Gray. The result helped him break into the world’s top 32 and marked another step towards the upper levels of professional snooker.

Selby made his first appearance at the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in 2005. He lost 10–5 to John Higgins in the first round, but returned the following year and beat Higgins 10–4 before eventually losing 13–8 to Mark Williams in the last 16. His progress at the Crucible continued in 2007, when he reached the World Championship final for the first time. He defeated Stephen Lee, Peter Ebdon, Ali Carter and Shaun Murphy on the way, earning a showdown with Higgins. Selby recovered from 12–4 behind to close the gap to 12–11, but Higgins ultimately won 18–13. Although he missed out on the trophy, the performance announced Selby as a serious contender for snooker’s biggest title.

His first major championship victory arrived at the 2008 Masters, held at Wembley Arena. Selby beat Stephen Lee 10–3 in the final to claim one of snooker’s most prestigious invitational titles. Later that season, he captured his first ranking event crown at the Welsh Open. He came from 8–5 behind to defeat Ronnie O’Sullivan 9–8 in a dramatic final. The victory was particularly important because it showed that Selby could match the sport’s most naturally attacking players while also using his own tactical strengths to turn a match around.

Selby continued to add major honours over the following seasons. He won the Masters again in 2010, beating O’Sullivan 10–9 in a close final. In 2011, he secured the Shanghai Masters by defeating Mark Williams 10–9, and he reached the world number one position for the first time that year. In December 2012, Selby won the UK Championship in York, beating Shaun Murphy 10–6 in the final. That success gave him the second part of snooker’s Triple Crown, which consists of the World Championship, UK Championship and Masters. He completed the collection when he eventually won the world title in 2014.

The 2013 Masters brought another major triumph. Selby defeated Neil Robertson 10–6 in the final to lift the trophy for a third time. Later that year, at the UK Championship, he made the 100th officially recognised maximum 147 break in snooker history during his match against Ricky Walden. The milestone underlined an important aspect of his game: despite his reputation for safety and tactical patience, Selby was capable of producing the highest possible break when the opportunity arose.

Selby’s defining breakthrough came at the 2014 World Championship. He defeated Michael White, Ali Carter, Alan McManus and Neil Robertson to reach the final, where he faced defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan led 10–5, but Selby produced a determined comeback and won 18–14. The result secured his first world title and established him as a member of snooker’s Triple Crown winners’ club. It also began a remarkable period in which Selby became one of the most consistent performers in the game’s biggest tournaments.

In 2015, Selby won the German Masters and China Open, strengthening his position among the leading players on tour. At the 2016 World Championship, he captured his second Crucible title by beating China’s Ding Junhui 18–14 in the final. Later that year, he won the UK Championship for a second time, defeating O’Sullivan 10–7. He also secured the International Championship and Paul Hunter Classic, producing a hugely successful season that confirmed his ability to win across different formats and venues.

Selby defended his World Championship title in 2017, overcoming John Higgins 18–15 in the final. Once again, he had to recover from a substantial deficit: Higgins led 10–4 before Selby gradually turned the match around. Selby’s victory made him a back-to-back world champion and reinforced his reputation as a player who becomes particularly difficult to beat when a match reaches its most demanding stage. Across the 2016–17 season, he won five ranking events, equalling the record for the most ranking titles in a single season at that time.

His success continued in 2018, when he won the China Open for a third time and the China Championship, beating Higgins 10–9 in the final. In 2019, he won the English Open and Scottish Open, demonstrating his continuing strength in the Home Nations events. He also collected the European Masters in 2020, defeating Martin Gould 9–8 in the final, and won the Scottish Open for a second consecutive season. These victories helped him maintain his position among the leading players, even as the world rankings and the competitive landscape continued to change.

In 2021, Selby won the World Snooker Championship for a fourth time. He defeated Shaun Murphy 18–15 in the final, adding another major chapter to his Crucible record. The victory placed him among the small group of players to have won the modern World Championship four or more times. Selby’s four world titles had arrived across seven years — 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021 — showing that his success was based on sustained excellence rather than a single exceptional season.

Selby has also spoken openly about experiencing depression, bringing an important personal dimension to his public career. Professional snooker requires long hours of practice, extended periods away from home and the ability to handle intense scrutiny, particularly at the World Championship. His willingness to discuss mental health has helped underline that even elite performers can face serious challenges beyond the table. His career should therefore be understood not only through trophies and rankings, but also through the resilience required to continue competing at the highest level.

He continued to win major events after his fourth world title. In September 2024, Selby claimed the British Open, and in February 2025 he won the Welsh Open for the second time, beating Stephen Maguire 9–6 in the final. That Welsh Open victory was reported as his 24th ranking title and formed part of a strong season in which he also won the Championship League Invitational. His record of continuing to win titles across many seasons is one of the clearest signs of his longevity in a sport where the competition is deep and the margins are often extremely small.

By the 2025–26 season, Selby had added further significant honours, including the Champion of Champions and UK Championship, according to his professional player profile. His achievements across the Triple Crown events remain central to his legacy: he has won the World Championship four times, the Masters three times and the UK Championship three times. Together, those ten Triple Crown titles place him among the most successful players in the history of the modern game.

Selby’s legacy rests on a rare combination of tactical discipline, break-building, competitive endurance and major-event success. His nickname, the “Jester from Leicester”, may suggest a light-hearted personality, but his approach at the table is intensely serious. From his early progress as a teenage professional to his four World Championship victories and continued success in later seasons, Mark Selby has shown that the highest level of snooker demands far more than potting balls. It requires planning, nerve, concentration and the ability to keep finding a way to win when the match gets difficult.
