ATP Kitzbuhel
The Austrian Open Kitzbuhel is a professional tennis tournament that is part of the ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 250 Series ranked event.
The tournament has a long history which can be traced all of the way back to 1894 when the event was originally known as the Austrian International Championships.
The annual event takes place from the Tennis Stadium Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Alps, where matches are played on outdoors clay courts.
Due to the 250 ranking and the fact the tournament takes place in the build up to the US Open when the majority of players have transferred over to hard courts, the Austrian Open Kitzbuhel features manly clay court specialists so whilst it may not have the top 10 star names of other tournament, it can often lead to high quality matches and an almost traditional feel, which is in keeping for this historical tournament.

As one of the most historic tournaments in European tennis, the Austrian Open actually started life in the Czech Republic capital of Prague as back in 1894 when the tournament was first held, Prague was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Interesting from a British perspective, it was British stars who dominated things back then with 11 of the first 12 events been one by Brits (Harold William Gandon, Conway William Blackwood Price, Herbert Guy Nevill Dering, Major Ritchie and Herbert Roper-Barrett), including the first 4 events.
Since then Brits haven’t done as well although Billy Knight did win in 1960 but since the tournament has been focussed on clay since then, it has been surprisingly players based in countries where clay is the dominant force who have enjoyed the most success with Spain and Argentina providing the bulk of champions in the last couple of decades.
The Austrian Open has had multiple host cities since its inception as it moved from Prague to the Austrian capital city of Vienna in 1921 after the war changed the make up of the German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It remained in Vienna until 1957 when it moved to Salzburg but by 1954 it was back in the capital, although this was only another short stay as it moved onto Portschach in 1958 before moving for the first time to Kitzbuhel in 1959. It then alternated between these 2 venues before moving to Graz in 1962.
It then moved between Portschach, Kitzbühel and Vienna before settling in its current home in 1969.
From then the tournament has gone onto become one of the most prestigious in European tennis and it has been able to attract many of the biggest stars in the world.
Past winners in Kitzbuhel include Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanisevic, Juan Martin del Potro, Robin Haase, David Goffin, Philipp Kohlschreiber and home favourite Dominic Thiem.
The tournament has held a number of different rankings on the ATP tour since its inception. It started life as an ATP World Series event until 1998 before it became an International Series Gold event from 1999 until 2008.
In 2009, it became an ATP World Tour 250 Series ranked event, which it holds today, although in 2010 it dropped down to the Challenger tour for a single season.
The event takes place on outdoor clay courts, usually in the warm summer months, which helps it to attract a good standard of players to the purpose built Tennis Stadium Kitzbuhel. The main stadium in the complex hosts 6,000 fans and attracts good crowds.
The town of Kitzbuhel is a popular holiday town in the Austrian Alps. The medieval town offers a stunning location along the river Kitzbuheler Ache in the Tyrol region of Austria.
The town is around 60 miles (100 kilometres) from the state capital of Innsbruck and is a popular ski resort in the winter and a popular getaway for upper-class families in the summer.
With the town been a popular holiday resort, a lot of fans mix a weekend getaway with a day out at the tennis which adds to the almost festival atmosphere of thee vent and helps to make sure that there are always good crowds no matter the time of the session and the stars on show.
Unfortunately for fans of tennis, it can often be difficult to watch live tennis action from tournaments that are not at the Grand Slam or Masters level in the UK or those events which are not taking place on British soil.
If you do manage to find live footage from matches at events such as the Austrian Open at the ATP Kitzbuhel, it will be on a pay tv channel that requires you to have an ongoing subscription but the great news is that it has never been easier to watch live tennis from across the globe as you can simply watch all of the action via our tennis live stream partners.
No matter if it is a match between the big stars at the event of the days opener or if it is from the singles or doubles event at the Austrian Open, our partners bring you all of the action live and best of all, you can watch tennis from across the globe all year round.
Whilst clay tournaments often go overlooked in the UK, this is one of the most popular events for fans and players alike on the men’s ATP Tour.
That has led it to win a number of awards on the ATP Tour including the ATP International Series Gold Tournament of the Year and the ATP World Series Tournament of the Year.
In 2019, there was lots for home fans to enjoy as local favourite Dominic Thiem pick up his first title before the relative, unknown Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia picked up his biggest win in 2020.
Since then, it has been a return of big-name stars to pick up the title with Casper Ruud winning in 2021 and Roberto Bautista Agut winning in 2022.
