Watch Flushing Meadows Live
The impressive USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, the home of the tournament, is an impressive complex featuring some of the biggest tennis stadiums in the world but it is part of a bigger complex that features a mix of other major stadiums, museums, attractions and more.
The complex is situated in a large open area known around the world as Flushing Meadows or locally as Corona Park, with is a massive park in the New York borough of Queens.
Flushing Meadows is one of the largest parks in the city and was until relatively recently a wetlands that straddled the nearby Flushing River and to today it borders the Flushing Bay to give it a relaxed vibe in the mist of one of the busiest and chaotic cities in the world.

As well as hosting the US home of tennis, the park is also home to the impressive Citi Field (home of the Major League Baseball side the New York Mets), the Queens Theatre in the Park, the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Museum, and the Queens Zoo.
The parks heyday was between 1939-1964, when it was first developed for the World’s Fair and developed for the 64 Worlds Fair from where some highlights of the park such as the Unisphere and the New York State Pavilion still stand to this day.

US Open History
As one of the most historic and prestigious tennis tournaments that feature all of the worlds top stars year after year, it is perhaps not too surprising that the event has seen many great moments in the sports history and there have been many occasions for bringing out the record books to take note of important moments.
When it comes to records and historical facts and stats in tennis, most are split into 2 groupings: the pre-open era and the open era.
Pre-Open Era
The pre-open era of the men’s singles tournament were often dominant by long winning runs for the top stars of the time with Richard Sears winning 7 straight events between 1881-87, William Larned winning between 1907-11 *as well as in 1901 and 02) and Bill Tilden winning between 1920-25 (and in 1929.
Those runs and 7 victories overall make each the joint record owner for titles as of course Sears is in front for the most consecutive wins.
Open Era
The players in the open era to get close to that record include Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer, with the latter enjoying a winning run of 4 consecutive titles between 2004-08.
Doubles
On the doubles side of the draw, it is once again Richard Sears who dominated the pre-open era with 6 wins, a record matched by Holcombe Ward, with both winning alongside multiple partners.
In the post open era, it has been the Bryan Brothers who have dominated with Mike winning a record 6 titles alongside his brother and Jack Sock in 2018.
The mixed doubles event at Flushing Meadows has been much more open and has never really been dominated by any 1 single partnership but the likes of Edwin P Fischer, Wallace F Johnson, Bill Tilden and Bill Talbert in the pre-open era and Owen Davidson, Marty Riessen and Bob Bryan in the open era have all enjoyed lots of success alongside a multitude of partners.
Women’s
The most dominant singles player on the women’s side of the draw was Molla Mallory, a Norwegian star of the 1910s and 1920’s who won on a record 8 occasions whilst the likes of Chris Evert and Serena Williams have enjoyed the most success in the open era.
Mallory as well as Helen Jacobs have also won the title on the most consecutive occasions with both winning for 4striaght years during their heydays.
Doubles
On the doubles side of the women’s event, there have been a couple of players who have stood out as the most dominant of their eras, with Margaret Osbourne duPont winning an incredible 13 titles during the pre-open era whilst Martina Navratilova won on 9 times during the open era- with both enjoying success with a number of partners.
Margaret Osbourne duPont also enjoyed lots of success in the mix doubles and won a record 9 titles alongside a number of partners once again whilst the likes of Margaret Court, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova enjoying lots of success in the open era.
Unseeded Limitations
In tennis, the competition at the top of the sport makes it almost impossible for unseeded players to go deep into an event and it takes a special player to even make it into the second week of a tournament but there have been 3 players who have not only made it through the early rounds but who have gone all of the way and actually picked up the title itself.
The first to it was Andre Agassi who before becoming one of the worlds biggest stars, won the title as an unseeded player in 1994.
The next to do it was Kim Clijsters who won in 2009, with Sloane Stephens shocking the world in 2017.
Shock The World
At an event such as this one, it is more often than not the best rises to the top and whilst there may be some surprises along the way, by the time the finals come around, it will normally be a match up between two top 5 or at least top 10 players who face off.
That is especially true in a sport that is as ultra-professional as this one but on the flip side of that, one of the reasons that a sport such as Tennis is so popular is partly down to the unpredictable nature of every moment of it.
No year is living memory was that as true as the 2021 edition of US Open where it was Daniil Medvedev who own the men’s singles title and whilst that may not be too much of a shock, he did defeated the all-conquering Novak Djokovic in straight sets in that final.
In the women’s final, one of the biggest shocks in the sports history not only saw the relative unknown pair Emma Raducanu and Canada’s Leylah Fernadez meet each other, the young Brit picked up the title for her first ever main tournament win.
The tournament continued to be a great one for Great British stars, with Joe Salisbury (alongside Rajeev Ram) winning the men’s doubles and he also won the mixed doubles alongside Desirae Krawczyk.
Jamie Murray also made the final of the men’s doubles, alongside long term partners Bruno Soares.
