ATP Santiago
The ATP Chile Open has a history that dates back to 1992, when the tournament was established in the wake of Brazil suspending the 3 tournaments that it hosted on the ATP Tour.
The tour itself wanted the tournaments to stay on the continent and one location to step up was Santiago, also known as Santiago de Chile.
The city is the largest, most populous, and capital city of Chile and whilst it is a popular holiday destination due to the history, culture and natural beauty of the city, for 1 week every year all eyes in the city are on the sport of tennis as the Chile Open become the main attraction.
The first edition of the Santiago based event came in November 1993 with the tournament building a base for itself until the year 2000.
The inaugural event in Santiago was won by Javier Frana of Argentina who defeated Emilio Sanchez Vicario in the final to pick up the first ever ATP Santiago title.
Other winners of the title during this first period in the city were Alberto Berasategui (of Spain in 1994), Slava Dosedel (of the Czech Republic in 1995), Hernan Gumy (of Argentina in 1996), Julian Alonso (of Spain in 1997), Francisoc Clavet (of Spain in 1998) and Gustavo Kuerten (of Brazil in 2000).
In 2001, the tournament moved to the city of Vina del Mar, which is a popular coastal city and holiday destination in Chile.
The Chile Open remined in the new location until 2009 with winners during this period including Guillermo Coria, who won the inaugural ATP Vina del Mar in 2001 after defeating fellow Argentine star Gaston Gaudio in the final.
Other winners on the Chilean coast were Fernando Gonzalez (the tournament’s first ever winner from Chile who won in 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2009), David Sanchez Munoz (of Spain in 2003), Gaston Gaudio (of Argentina in 2005), Jose Acasuso (of Argentina in 2006) and Luis Horna (of Peru in 2007).
The event moved back to Santiago for just 2 editions between 2010-2011 before making the move back to Vina del Mar.
This period saw Thomaz Bellucci (of Brazil in 2010) and Tommy Robredo (of Spain in 2011) win the title in Santiago and Juan Monaco (of Argentina in 2012), Horacio Zeballos (of Argentina in 2013 who defeated Rafa Nadal in the final in the tournaments biggest shock) and Fabio Fognini (of Italy in 2014) win the title on the coast in Vina del Mar.
It stayed on the Chilean coast for just 3 years before moving on again in 2014.
During this period, the event moved back to Brazil, as the Brasil Open, which left Santiago without a main ATP level tennis tournament until the year 2020, when the event return to the city.
On its return to Santiago, Brazilian youngster Thiago Seyboth Wild beat Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final.
The 2022 edition saw Pedro Martinez of Spain defeat Sebastian Baez of Argentina in the singles final whilst there was success for the all Brazilian partnership of Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni Alves in the doubles final.
As with the vast majority of tennis tournaments that take place on the men’s ATP Tour, the ATP Santiago also features a doubles event where fans in attendance can watch doubles specialists mix it up with singles stars doing double duty to give some entertaining tennis and the great news for fan sis that all of the doubles action can be live via our streaming partners.
It has been in the doubles competition that the most British success has been seen when Jonny O’Mara team up with Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador to reach the final of the 2020 edition but they came up just short in a losing effort to the all-Spanish duo of Roberto Carballes Baena and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
No matter if you want to watch the doubles event form the tournament or the singles action, you can do easily and safely via the streaming services that we feature.
If you are a fan of tennis you will likely know just how difficult it can be to watch live coverage of tournaments such as this one on television over here in the UK.
Even if you are in the fortunate position to have an expensive and on going subscription to sports tv channels that show live tennis coverage, a tournament such as this will likely only have a limited number of matches shown at best.
Thankfully, you can now pick and choose to watch the action that you want to watch from the Chile Open no matter if you want to watch the tournament opener of the Chile Open final or if you want to watch the number 1 star at the event or the lowest ranked player.
If you do decide to watch the ATP Santiago live via one of the streaming services of the online bookmakers that we feature on this page, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch live tennis not just from this tournament but from events held around the world all season long from both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.
