Geneva Open Tennis

The Geneva Open is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP Tour that takes place at the Tennis Club de Geneve at the Parc des Eaux-Vives in the city of Geneva in Switzerland.

The club is the oldest and largest in Switzerland so it is a famous home of an event that is both new and old at the same time.

That is due to the fact that although the tournament was established way back in 1980, it was initially abolished in 1991 when the event dropped down to a Challenger level event and was replace don the ATP Tour proper.

Thankfully, for local fans, the event made its return to the full tour in 2015 when it took over the spot of the ATP Dusseldorf tournament on the tour.

Both stages of the event have seen wins for locals with Claudio Mazzadri and Marc Rosset winning in the 1980’s and Stan Wawrinka winning the tournament twice since its return.

The modern tournament is an outdoor clay court tournament that is an ATP Tour 250 Series level event.

Although the event has a relatively low ranking, the tournament attracts lots of top stars thanks in a part to a great host city and a large prize fund and a good selection of clay court specialists, so it is no surprise that the event offers lots of great action and the good news for all tennis fan sis that you can watch the action live via the streaming services featured on this page.

ATP Geneva

Although the tournament is a relatively new one on the tour, it does take some of the history and prestige from the early days of the event and that helps to elevate the current tournament.

As well as been split into the before cancellation and after cancellation periods of the event, it is probably best to split the tournaments history into 3 eras as between 1980 the event was held on the Grand Prix circuit.

Between 1990-1991 it was an ATP Tour event and now on its return it is an ATP 250 series level event.

The first ever title winner of the inaugural Geneva Open was Balazs Taroczy of Hungary who defeated Adriano Panatta of Italy in the final of the 1980 edition.

The event was then dominated by Swedish stars with Bjorn Borg winning in 1981 and Mads Wilander winning in both 1982 and 1983 when he defeated fellow Swede Henrik Sundstrom to become the first player to defend his title at the Geneva Open.

The first non-European winner of the tournament came in 1984 when Aaron Krickstein of the United States of America defeated Henrik Sundstrom to win the title with the Swede also becoming the first player to lose back to back finals.

The first player from Switzerland to win one of the country’s leading events was Claudio Mezzadri who defeated Tomas Smid of the Czech Republic in the 1987 final.

The final winner of the event as a Grand Prix event was fittingly won by a Swiss star when Marc Rosset defeated Guillermo Perez Rolden of Argentina in the final.

The first tournament to be held as an ATP Tour event was won by Horst Skoff of Austria who defeated Sergi Bruguera of Spain before the last tournament to be held for over 2 decades, which came in 1991 featured an all-Australian line up as Thomas Muster defeated Horst Skoff for the title.

Upon the tournaments return to the tour in 2015 as an ATP level event it was Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil who the title against Joao Sousa of Portugal in the final to also become the first winner of the event form South America.

The next 2 events were won by the Swiss star Stan Wawrinka with Alexander Zverev of Germany amongst the other players to win the event in the new era.

As is the case on the majority of tennis tournaments held on the ATP Tour, the ATP Geneva also features a doubles event and the good news for all tennis fans is that you can watch all of that great action as well.

The first winners of the doubles title back in 1980 were the duo of Zeljko Franulovic of Croatia (then Yugoslavia) and Balazs Taroczy who defeated the home stars of Heinz and Markus Gunthardt.

The first winners of the tournament upon its return to the tour in 2015 were the Colombian duo of Juan Sebastien Cabal and Robert Farah who defeated Raven Klassen of South Africa and Lu Yen-hsun.

Established Event

The 2022 edition of the tournament saw Casper Ruud of Norway pull of a relatively surprise win when he defeated Joao Sousa in the final of the singles event whilst the Croatian duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic won the doubles event by defeating Spain’s Pablo Andujar and Matwe Middelkoop of The Netherlands.
