ATP Marrakech
The Grand Prix Hassan II, also known simply as the ATP Marrakech, is one of the leading tennis competition held on the continent of Africa and has been for much of its history the only ATP Tour level event to be held on the continent, but it actually started life as a Challenger Series event way back in 1984.
As well as been a lower level tournament back in the beginning, the tournament also started life in the popular coastal city of Casablanca, where the action came from the Complexe Al Amal.
The centre court at venue featured a stadium capable of hosting 5,500 fans and that helped to secure hosting the tournament between 1984-2015.
Over the year there have been lots of changes to the tournament, from its name to its ranking and from its location to its prize fund but one thing has remained consistent as the event has always kept the Grand Prix Hassan II title and it has also been an outdoor clay court tournament.
That has helped it to build up a reputation and to become a prestigious event and it can now attract a good mix of big stars and clay court specialists to make for an exciting tournament.
Between 1986 the event was played in Casablanca where it was a Challenge Series level event with the winners during this period of tournament been Hans Gildemeister (of Chile who won the inaugural Casablanca Challenger title in 1984), Ronald Agenor (of the United States in 1985), David De Miguel (of Spain in 1986), Tarik Benhabiles (of France in 1987), Franco Davin (of Argentina in 1988) and Andres Vosand (of Estonia/USSR in 1989).
The tournament remained in the city but became an ATP World Series level event in 1989 and continued after taking 1991 off of the tour.
The winners of the tournament during this era were Thomas Muster (of Austria who won the inaugural ATP Casablanca level event in 1990), Guillermo Perez Roldan (of Argentina in 1992 and 1993), Renzo Furlan (of Italy in 1994), Gilbert Schaller (of Austria in 1995), Tomas Carbonell (of Spain in 1996) and Hitcham Arazi (the first ever winner from the host nation of Morocco in 1997).
In 1998, the event became an ATP international Series level event with the winners of the tournament during this era been Andrea Gaudenzi (the inaugural winner at this level of Italy in 1998), Alberto Martin (of Spain in 1999), Fernando Vicente (of Spain in 2000), Younes El Aynaoui (of Morocco in 2002), Julien Boutter (of France in 2003), Santiago Ventura (of Spain in 2004), Mariano Puerto (of Argentina in 2005), Daniele Bracciali (of Italy in 2006), Paul-Henri Mathieu (of France in 2007) and Gilles Simon (of France in 2008).
In 2009, the tournament changes to an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event with the winners during this period been Juan Carlos Ferrero (of Spain who own the inaugural event at this level in 2009), Stan Wawrinka (of Switzerland in 2010), Pablo Andujar (of Spain in both 2011 and 2012), Tommy Robredo (of Spain in 2013), Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (of Spain in 2014) and Martin Klizan (of Slovakia in 2015).
In 2016, the tournament moved locations from Casablanca to Marrakesh and it was Federico Delbonis of Argentina who won the inaugural ATP Marrakesh event with other winners during this era including Borna Coric (of Croatia in 2017), Pablo Andujar (of Spain in 2018) and Benoit Paire (of France in 2019).
As you can see from the list above, it has been mostly players who are clay court specialists and from the top court playing countries who have gone on to enjoy the most success in Morocco but there was some excitement for British fans in 2018, when Britain’s own Kyle Edmund made it through to the final in a losing effort to Pablo Andujar.
As with the majority of tennis tournaments on the ATP Tour, there is also a doubles event that features at the tournament and it has been on this side of the event that their has been the most British success.
In the 2011 final, Colin Fleming teamed up with Igor Zelenay of Slovakia in a losing effort against Robert Lindstedt (of Sweden) and Horia Tecau (of Romania).
Dominic Inglot when one better in 2017, when he teamed up with Mate Pavic of Croatia to defeat Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain to become the first British winner in Morocco.
After a two year hiatus from the tour, the event returned in 2022 when Belgium’s David Goffin took on and defeated Alex Molcan of Slovakia in a come from behind victory in the final.
The doubles event saw Brazil’s Rafael Matos and Spain’s David Vega Hernandez team up to win the title.
